Diarmuid and Grainne

[00:00:01] Diarmuid And Grainne - Cruachan

[00:00:35] The years they passed like a flowing stream

[00:00:37] In a highland vale shrouded in green

[00:00:40] The Fianna marched with Fionn at their helm

[00:00:42] Though older and wiser this lord of the realm

[00:00:44] He was loyal to his king Cormac Mac Art

[00:00:46] And to his daughter would give his heart

[00:00:48] Her name was Grainne noble and fair

[00:00:51] But to marry Fionn she would not dare

[00:00:53] A feast was prepared in Tara's great halls

[00:00:55] Marriage banners adorned on the walls

[00:00:57] Grainne sat pale as the feast began

[00:00:59] Then she spied Diarmuid and to him she ran

[00:01:02] My heart is filled with longing for you

[00:01:04] She whispered to Diarmuid he knew not what to do

[00:01:06] Grainne so fair with eyes like the sun

[00:01:08] Please do not tempt me; do not anger Fionn

[00:01:10] She did not listen and she did not care

[00:01:12] She enchanted Diarmuid with her fiery stare

[00:01:15] He was under a geis to do what she pleased

[00:01:17] Though he did not resist or ask for release

[00:01:19] During the night when the Fianna did sleep

[00:01:21] Through Tara's great halls the lovers did creep

[00:01:23] They fled through the night to where they knew not

[00:01:25] Away from Fionn

[00:01:27] They dared not stop

[00:01:45] The cry of hounds they heard in the night

[00:01:48] They ran until they were far from sight

[00:01:50] Days became weeks and still they fled

[00:01:52] If caught by Fionn they would both be dead

[00:01:54] One night as they lay in a forest so dark

[00:01:56] They pledged their love gave each other their heart

[00:01:58] They made love that night on a bed of grass

[00:02:00] Two lovers united never to part

[00:02:03] For a year and a half the chase went on

[00:02:05] Wherever Fionn looked the lovers were gone

[00:02:07] They were aided by Aengus many a time

[00:02:09] He was father of Diarmuid a warrior fine

[00:02:11] Aengus grew tired of this bitter pursuit

[00:02:13] He met Fionn and the king to try end the dispute

[00:02:16] Neither were pleased but they did agree

[00:02:18] They could live in peace they were now free

[00:02:20] Fionn relented and gave them some land

[00:02:22] They lived in peace and all was grand

[00:02:25] Years passed by and the lovers grew old

[00:02:27] They had four sons who grew mighty and bold

[00:02:29] Diarmuid longed to go hunting with Fionn

[00:02:31] Like in the old days when they were young

[00:02:33] One fateful night he opened the door

[00:02:35] There stood Fionn they were friends once more

[00:02:38] There was feasting that night and stories told

[00:02:39] The two merry men remembered the battles of old

[00:02:42] They planned to go hunting at first light

[00:02:44] Though Diarmuid heard cries throughout the night

[00:02:46] The Boar was a beast he would not hunt

[00:02:48] From the wildest swine to the smallest runt

[00:02:51] To kill it would bring his own demise

[00:02:53] This curse he had carried all his life

[00:03:04] When morning came Diarmuid set out

[00:03:06] He remembered those cries and was filled with doubt

[00:03:08] He came upon Fionn at the top of a hill

[00:03:10] There was blood on his hands he looked ready to kill

[00:03:13] A boar is loose it has killed my hound

[00:03:15] Fionn pointed to the beast that lay on the ground

[00:03:17] There then came a crash and the boar attacked

[00:03:19] It struck Diarmuid hard and broke his back

[00:03:39] As he fell down he stabbed the boar

[00:03:41] He killed the beast it was no more

[00:03:43] Fionn help me I'm dying and you have the gift

[00:03:45] Of healing get water I'm starting to drift

[00:03:47] Fionn ran to the stream and cupped his hand

[00:03:49] But the water fell through and soaked into the sand

[00:03:52] He tried again this time with success

[00:03:54] But when he returned Diarmuid was dead

[00:03:56] Grainne fell ill when she heard he was dead

[00:03:58] She cursed Fionn and Fianna oh how her heart bled

[00:04:00] Diarmuid sweet Diarmuid I will always love thee;

[00:04:03] I will never forget the way you loved me

[00:04:05] She lived on her own for some time on her land

[00:04:07] Until Fionn did come to ask for her hand

[00:04:09] This time she agreed Fionn had mended his ways

[00:04:11] They went to Kildare to see out their days
