[00:00:03] It is generally believed that wristwatches are an exception

[00:00:07] to the normal sequence in the evolution of men's jewelry.

[00:00:12] Reversing the usual order, they were first worn by women and then

[00:00:20] In the old days, queens included wristwatches among their crown

[00:00:25] jewelry.

[00:00:26] Later they were worn by Swiss workers and farmers.

[00:00:32] Until World War I, Americans associated the watch with

[00:00:36] fortune hunters.

[00:00:38] Then army officers discovered that the wristwatch was

[00:00:42] most practical for active combat.

[00:00:46] Race car drivers also loved to wear wristwatches and pilots

[00:00:51] found them most useful while flying.

[00:00:55] Soon men dared to wear wristwatches without feeling

[00:01:00] self-conscious.

[00:01:02] By 1924 some 30% of men's watches were worn on the wrist.

[00:01:10] Today the figure is 90% and they are now worn by both men and

[00:01:16] women for practical purposes rather than for decoration.
