The Story Of Bo Diddley (2004 Digital Remaster)

[00:00:02] The Story Of Bo Diddley (2004 Digital Remaster) - The Animals

[00:00:11] Now let's hear the story of Bo Diddley

[00:00:14] And the rock 'n' roll scene in general

[00:00:18] Bo Diddley was born Ellis McDaniels

[00:00:22] In a place called McCoom

[00:00:24] Mississipi about 1926

[00:00:28] He moved to Chicago about 1938

[00:00:33] Where his name was eventually changed

[00:00:35] To Bo Diddley

[00:00:38] He practiced the guitar everyday and sometimes into the night

[00:00:45] Till his papa's hair began to turn white

[00:00:50] His pa said "Son listen hear I know

[00:00:54] You can stay but that guitar has just gotta go"

[00:00:59] So he pulled his hat down over his eyes

[00:01:03] Headed out for them western skies

[00:01:05] I think Bob Dylan said that

[00:01:06] He hit New York City

[00:01:11] He began to play at the Apollo in Harlem

[00:01:14] Good scene there everybody raving

[00:01:18] One day one night came a Cadillac with four head lights

[00:01:27] Came a man with a big long fat cigar

[00:01:29] Said "C'mere son I'm gonna make you a star"

[00:01:33] Bo Diddley said "Uh what's in it for me "

[00:01:38] Man said "Shut your mouth son

[00:01:39] Play the guitar and you just wait and see"

[00:01:43] Well that boy made it he made it real big

[00:01:47] And so did the rest of the rock 'n' roll scene along with him

[00:01:52] And a white guy called Johnny Otis took Bo Diddleys rhythm

[00:01:56] He changed it into handjive and it went like this

[00:02:03] In a little old country town one day

[00:02:07] A little old country band began to play

[00:02:10] Add two guitars and a beat up saxophone

[00:02:14] When the drummer said "Boy those cats begin to roam"

[00:02:18] Oh baby oh we oh oh

[00:02:22] Ooh la la that rock 'n' roll

[00:02:25] Ya hear me oh we oh oh

[00:02:30] Ooh la la that rock 'n' roll

[00:02:36] Then in the U S music scene there was big changes made

[00:02:40] Due to circumstances beyond our control such as payola

[00:02:46] The rock 'n' roll scene died after two years of solid rock

[00:02:50] And you got discs like ah

[00:02:54] "Take good care of my baby

[00:02:58] Please don't ever make her blue" and so forth

[00:03:04] About ah one year later in a place called Liverpool in England

[00:03:10] Four young guys with mop haircuts began to sing stuff like ah

[00:03:17] "It's been a hard days night

[00:03:21] And I've been workin' like a dog" and so on

[00:03:27] In a place called Richmond in Surrey

[00:03:30] Way down in the deep south

[00:03:33] They got guys with long hair down their back singin'

[00:03:36] "I wanna be your lover baby I wanna be your man yeah"

[00:03:41] And all that jazz

[00:03:43] Now we've doin' this number Bo Diddley

[00:03:45] For quite some time now

[00:03:47] Bo Diddley visited this country last year

[00:03:53] We were playin' at the club a Gogo in Newcastle

[00:03:56] Our home town

[00:03:59] And the doors opened one night and to our surprise

[00:04:03] Walked in the man himself Bo Diddley

[00:04:06] Along with him was Jerome Green his Maraca man

[00:04:11] And the Duchess his gorgeous sister

[00:04:15] And a we were doin' doin' this number

[00:04:18] Along with them came the Rolling Stones the Mersey Beats

[00:04:23] They're all standin' around diggin' it

[00:04:25] And I overheard Bo Diddley talkin'

[00:04:28] He turned around to Jermone Green

[00:04:29] And he said "Hey Jerome

[00:04:33] What do you think these guys doin' our our material "

[00:04:38] Jerome said "Uh where's the bar man

[00:04:42] Please show me to the bar"

[00:04:44] He turned around the Duchess

[00:04:45] And he said "Hey Duchess

[00:04:46] What do you think of these young guys doin' our material "

[00:04:49] She said "I don't know

[00:04:52] I only came across here to see

[00:04:54] The changin' of the guards and all that jazz"

[00:04:57] Well Bo Diddley looked up at me and he said

[00:05:00] With half closed eyes and a smile

[00:05:01] He said "Man took off his glasses"

[00:05:07] He said "Man that sure is the biggest load of rubbish

[00:05:13] I ever heard in my life"

[00:05:16] Hey Bo Diddley

[00:05:20] Oh Bo Diddley

[00:05:24] Yeah Bo Diddley

[00:05:28] Oh Bo Diddley

[00:05:31] Yeah Bo Diddley

[00:05:35] Oh Bo Diddley
