Hurricane

[00:00:00] Hurricane - InstaHit Crew

[00:00:15] Pistol shots ring out in the barroom night

[00:00:19] Enter Patty Valentine from the upper hall.

[00:00:23] She sees the bartender in a pool of blood,

[00:00:27] Cries out, "My God, they killed them all!"

[00:00:30] Here comes the story of the Hurricane,

[00:00:34] The man the authorities came to blame

[00:00:38] For somethin' that he never done.

[00:00:42] Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been

[00:00:46] The champion of the world.

[00:00:58] Three bodies lyin' there does Patty see

[00:01:02] And another man named Bello, movin' around mysteriously.

[00:01:06] "I didn't do it," he says, and he throws up his hands

[00:01:09] "I was only robbin' the register, I hope you understand.

[00:01:13] I saw them leavin'," he says, and he stops

[00:01:17] "One of us had better call up the cops."

[00:01:21] And so Patty calls the cops

[00:01:24] And they arrive on the scene with their red lights flashin'

[00:01:28] In the hot New Jersey night.

[00:01:41] Meanwhile, far away in another part of town

[00:01:45] Rubin Carter and a couple of friends are drivin' around.

[00:01:48] Number one contender for the middleweight crown

[00:01:52] Had no idea what kinda sh*t was about to go down

[00:01:56] When a cop pulled him over to the side of the road

[00:02:00] Just like the time before and the time before that.

[00:02:03] In Paterson that's just the way things go.

[00:02:07] If you're black you might as well not show up on the street

[00:02:11] 'Less you wanna draw the heat.

[00:02:24] Alfred Bello had a partner and he had a rap for the cops.

[00:02:27] Him and Arthur Dexter Bradley were just out prowlin' around

[00:02:31] He said, "I saw two men runnin' out, they looked like

[00:02:34] Middleweights

[00:02:35] They jumped into a white car with out-of-state plates."

[00:02:39] And Miss Patty Valentine just nodded her head.

[00:02:42] Cop said, "Wait a minute, boys, this one's not dead"

[00:02:46] So they took him to the infirmary

[00:02:50] And though this man could hardly see

[00:02:53] They told him that he could identify the guilty men.

[00:03:07] Fourn the mornin' and they haul Rubin in,

[00:03:10] Take him to the hospital and they bring him upstairs.

[00:03:14] The wounded man looks up through his one dyin' eye

[00:03:17] Says, "Wha'd you bring him in here for? He ain't the guy!"

[00:03:22] Yes, here's the story of the Hurricane,

[00:03:25] The man the authorities came to blame

[00:03:29] For somethin' that he never done.

[00:03:33] Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been

[00:03:37] The champion of the world.

[00:03:50] Four months later, the ghettos are in flame,

[00:03:53] Rubin's in South America, fightin' for his name

[00:03:56] While Arthur Dexter Bradley's still in the robbery game

[00:04:00] And the cops are puttin' the screws to him, lookin' for somebody

[00:04:03] To blame.

[00:04:04] "Remember that murder that happened in a bar?"

[00:04:08] "Remember you said you saw the getaway car?"

[00:04:11] "You think you'd like to play ball with the law?"

[00:04:15] "Think it might-a been that fighter that you saw runnin' that

[00:04:18] Night?"

[00:04:20] "Don't forget that you are white."

[00:04:33] Arthur Dexter Bradley said, "I'm really not sure."

[00:04:36] Cops said, " A poor boy like you could use a break

[00:04:39] We got you for the motel job and we're talkin' to your friend

[00:04:42] Bello

[00:04:43] Now you don't wanta have to go back to jail, be a nice fellow.

[00:04:47] You'll be doin' society a favor.

[00:04:51] That sonofabitch is brave and gettin' braver.

[00:04:55] We want to put his a** in stir

[00:04:58] We want to pin this triple murder on him

[00:05:03] He ain't no Gentleman Jim."

[00:05:15] Rubin could take a man out with just one punch

[00:05:18] But he never did like to talk about it all that much.

[00:05:22] It's my work, he'd say, and I do it for pay

[00:05:26] And when it's over I'd just as soon go on my way

[00:05:30] Up to some paradise

[00:05:33] Where the trout streams flow and the air is nice

[00:05:37] And ride a horse along a trail.

[00:05:41] But then they took him to the jailhouse

[00:05:44] Where they try to turn a man into a mouse.

[00:05:58] All of Rubin's cards were marked in advance

[00:06:01] The trial was a pig-circus, he never had a chance.

[00:06:05] The judge made Rubin's witnesses drunkards from the slums

[00:06:09] To the white folks who watched he was a revolutionary bum

[00:06:13] And to the black folks he was just a crazy nigger.

[00:06:16] No one doubted that he pulled the trigger.

[00:06:20] And though they could not produce the gun,

[00:06:24] The D.A. said he was the one who did the deed

[00:06:28] And the all-white jury agreed.

[00:06:42] Rubin Carter was falsely tried.

[00:06:44] The crime was murder "one," guess who testified?

[00:06:48] Bello and Bradley and they both baldly lied

[00:06:51] And the newspapers, they all went along for the ride.

[00:06:56] How can the life of such a man

[00:06:59] Be in the palm of some fool's hand?

[00:07:03] To see him obviously framed

[00:07:06] Couldn't help but make me feel ashamed to live in a land

[00:07:11] Where justice is a game.

[00:07:23] Now all the criminals in their coats and their ties

[00:07:27] Are free to drink martinis and watch the sun rise

[00:07:30] While Rubin sits like Buddha in a ten-foot cell

[00:07:34] An innocent man in a living hell.

[00:07:38] Yes, that's the story of the Hurricane,

[00:07:42] But it won't be over till they clear his name

[00:07:46] And give him back the time he's done.

[00:07:49] Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been

[00:07:54] The champion of the world.
