Streets of New York

[00:00:00] Streets of New York - Bagatelle

[00:00:19] I was 18yrs old when

[00:00:21] I went down to Dublin but a fistful

[00:00:24] Of money and a cartload of dreams

[00:00:28] "Take your time" said me father

[00:00:30] Stop rushing like hell and remember

[00:00:32] All is not what it seems to be

[00:00:36] For there's fellas that would cut ye

[00:00:38] For the coat on yer back

[00:00:40] Or the watch that you got from your mother

[00:00:44] So take care me young bucko

[00:00:46] And mind yourself well and will ya

[00:00:48] Give this wee note to me brother

[00:00:52] At the time Uncle Benjy was

[00:00:54] A policeman in Brooklyn

[00:00:56] And me father the youngest

[00:00:57] Looked after the farm

[00:01:01] When a phonecall from America said

[00:01:02] 'Send the lad over'

[00:01:04] And the oul fella said 'Sure wouldn't do any

[00:01:07] Harm' for I've spent me life

[00:01:11] Working this dirty old ground

[00:01:13] For a few pints of porter

[00:01:15] And the smell of a pound

[00:01:17] Sure maybe there's something

[00:01:19] You'll learn or you'll see

[00:01:20] And you can bring it back home

[00:01:22] Make it easy on me

[00:01:27] So I landed at Kennedy and a big yellow taxi

[00:01:31] Carried me and me bags through

[00:01:33] The streets and the rain

[00:01:36] Well me poor heart was thumpin

[00:01:38] Around with excitement

[00:01:40] And I hardly even heard what the driver was sayin

[00:01:44] We came in the Shore Parkway

[00:01:46] To the faltlands of Brooklyn

[00:01:48] To me Uncle's apartment on East 53rd

[00:01:52] I was feeling so happy I was humming a song

[00:01:56] And I sang "You're as free as a bird"

[00:02:00] Well to shorten the story what I found out that

[00:02:02] Day was that Benjy was shot down in an uptown

[00:02:06] Foray and while I was flying my way to New York

[00:02:11] Poor Benjy was lying in a cold city morgue

[00:02:15] Well I phoned up the old fella told him the news

[00:02:19] I could tell he could

[00:02:20] Hardly stand up in his shoes

[00:02:23] And he wept as he told me

[00:02:25] 'Go ahead with the plans

[00:02:27] And not to forget be a proud Irish man'

[00:02:33] So I went to Nellies beside Fordham road and

[00:02:37] I started to learn about lifting the load

[00:02:42] But the heaviest thing that I carried that year

[00:02:45] Was the bittersweet thought of my hometown so dear

[00:02:50] I went home that December 'cause the oul fella died

[00:02:54] Had to borrow the money from Phil on the side

[00:02:58] And all the bright flowers and brass couldn't hide

[00:03:01] The poor wasted face of me father

[00:03:05] I sold up the oul farmyard for what it

[00:03:08] Was worth and into my bag stuck

[00:03:10] A handful of earth then I boarded a train

[00:03:14] And I caught me a plane

[00:03:16] And I found meself back in the US again

[00:03:20] It's been 22yrs since

[00:03:23] I've set foot in Dublin

[00:03:24] Me kids know to use the correct knife and fork

[00:03:31] But I'll never forget the green grass and the rivers

[00:03:35] As I keep law and order in the streets of New York
