They’re Tearin’ The Labor Camps Down

[00:00:00] I guess it's no secret eh that I did a few years in san quentin

[00:00:04] And on my release I noticed that a lot of different things had come to pass

[00:00:08] While I was out of circulation

[00:00:10] Like the girls dresses were shorter and the freeways were wider

[00:00:15] And the ole steam engines were gone forever

[00:00:18] But the one thing I noticed most of all down through the san joachin valley

[00:00:22] Was the disapperance of so many labor camps

[00:00:25] Where once I'd lived from time to time myself

[00:00:30] I noticed that that one there at houston california was gone

[00:00:34] And the ole crown's camp that lie between formosa and bakersfield

[00:00:38] Was just a barren spot with a few cottonwood trees

[00:00:41] And surrounded by an olive orchard

[00:00:44] Tho a few still remain like the ole blackburn's camp out on weepatch highway

[00:00:49] It was an evident fact that someone was tryin' to do away with them all

[00:00:53] And I couldn't help but wonder what's gonna happen to the farm workers

[00:00:58] And the fruit pickers who move from town to town

[00:01:01] The man with the big family who can't afford the ole high standard of livin'

[00:01:06] And was these thoughts and my mem'ries that inspired me to write this song

[00:01:20] I came back to this ole town cause my home was here

[00:01:25] And to try to find some things I'd left behind

[00:01:30] Tho' I've only been away for just a few short years

[00:01:35] But I'd forgot about the pace of modern times

[00:01:39] I saw changes all around me and some were good

[00:01:44] But I hardly recognized my side of town

[00:01:49] They tore down the swingin' casing from the cottowood

[00:01:54] And that tree was all that marked familar ground

[00:01:58] Oh they're tearin' the labor camps down

[00:02:03] And I feel a little sentimental shame

[00:02:08] Where's a hungry man gonna live at in this town

[00:02:13] Oh they're tearin' the labor camps down

[00:02:25] The hilltop family market had been moved somewhere

[00:02:30] And the name was changed to fit the newer homes

[00:02:35] The folks that I remember were no longer there

[00:02:49] And the cabin that my daddy built was gone

[00:02:58] Oh they're tearin' the labor camps down

[00:03:08] They're tearin' the labor camps down
