Word of Mouth(Live)

[00:00:00] Word Of Mouth (Live) - Laurie Anderson

[00:00:00] In 1980 as part of a project called Word of Mouth

[00:00:06] I was invited along with a living other artists

[00:00:10] To go to Panape a tiny island

[00:00:13] In the middle of the Pacific

[00:00:16] The idea was that we'd sit around talking for a few

[00:00:20] Days and that the conversations

[00:00:22] Would be made into a talking record

[00:00:27] The first night we were all really jet-lagged but

[00:00:31] As soon as we sat down the organizers set up all

[00:00:35] These mikes and switched on

[00:00:37] Thousand white light bulbs

[00:00:40] And we tried our best to seem as

[00:00:42] Intelligent as possible

[00:00:46] Television had just come to Panape a week before

[00:00:49] We arrived and there was a strong excitement

[00:00:52] Around the island as people crowded

[00:00:55] Around the few sets

[00:00:58] Then the day after we arrived in a bizarre replay

[00:01:02] Of the first TV show ever broadcast to Panape

[00:01:07] Prisoners escaped from a jail broke into the

[00:01:11] Radio station and murdered the DJ

[00:01:16] Then they went off on a

[00:01:17] Rampage through the jungle

[00:01:20] Armed with lawnmower blades In all four people

[00:01:26] Were murdered in cold blood

[00:01:30] Detectives flown

[00:01:32] In from Guam to investigate

[00:01:34] Swarmed everywhere

[00:01:37] At night we stayed around in our cottages

[00:01:41] Listening out into the jungle

[00:01:49] Finally the local chief decided to hold a

[00:01:53] Ceremony for the murder victims

[00:01:57] The artist Marina Brownovich and I went

[00:02:00] As representatives of our group to film it

[00:02:05] The ceremony was held in a large thatched

[00:02:08] Lean-to and most of the ceremony involved

[00:02:12] Cooking beans in pits and brewing

[00:02:15] A dark drink from roots

[00:02:20] The smell was overwhelming Dogs around barking

[00:02:27] And everybody seemed to be having a

[00:02:28] Fairly good time as funerals go

[00:02:35] After a few hours Marina and I

[00:02:38] Were presented to the chief

[00:02:40] Who was sitting on a raised platform above the pits

[00:02:45] We'd been told we couldn't turn our backs on the

[00:02:48] Chief at any time or ever be higher than he was

[00:02:53] So we scrambled up onto the platform with our film

[00:02:56] Equipment and sort of duck-waddled up

[00:02:59] Backwards to the chief

[00:03:05] As a present I brought one of those

[00:03:07] Fred Flintstone cameras

[00:03:10] The kind where the film canister is

[00:03:11] Also the body of the camera

[00:03:14] And I presented it to the chief

[00:03:18] He seemed delighted and began to click off pictures

[00:03:23] He wasn't advancing the film between shots

[00:03:27] But since we were told we shouldn't

[00:03:29] Speak unless spoken to

[00:03:32] I wasn't able to inform him that he

[00:03:35] Wasn't going to get twelve pictures

[00:03:40] But only one very very complicated one

[00:03:49] After a couple more hours the chief lifted his hand

[00:03:53] And there was absolute silence

[00:03:58] All the dogs had suddenly stopped barking

[00:04:02] We looked around and saw the dogs

[00:04:07] All their throats had been simultaneously

[00:04:10] Cut and their bodies

[00:04:14] Still breathing pierced with rods

[00:04:19] Were turning on those pits

[00:04:25] The chief insisted we join in the meal but Marina

[00:04:29] Had turned green and I asked

[00:04:31] If we could just have ours to go

[00:04:38] They carefully wrapped the dogs in leaves

[00:04:42] And we carried their bodies away
