Soul of a Convict

[00:00:00] Soul of a Convict - Porter Wagoner

[00:00:00] Written by:Eddie Sovine/Bob Ferguson

[00:00:00] Will he take the soul of a convict

[00:00:08] Could I be one of those he choosed

[00:00:18] I was taught the bible from childhood

[00:00:21] At my mother's knee I learned to pray

[00:00:23] I was taught of God and all his goodness

[00:00:26] And the devil and his evil ways

[00:00:30] There's good in the bad and bad in the good

[00:00:33] And there's none that's free from sin

[00:00:36] But there's some questions I've wondered about

[00:00:40] What happens to the men who die in the pen

[00:00:45] Just imagine yourself the judge God almighty

[00:00:50] As you gaze over all these men

[00:00:53] When death takes it's toll

[00:00:55] What becomes of the soul of the men

[00:00:59] Who die in the pen

[00:01:02] Do you think of God that's true

[00:01:04] And just could look from his heavenly throne

[00:01:07] And be pleased to see men placed in chains and stripes

[00:01:11] And tucked from their loved ones at home

[00:01:14] Worked until they're completely exhuasted

[00:01:17] And your soul cries out in vain

[00:01:21] Fed like a hog and treated like a dog

[00:01:25] And at night to the bed you're chained

[00:01:29] Worked from sunup to sundown

[00:01:32] Through all kinds of weather

[00:01:35] And if you don't do the things just right

[00:01:38] You get introduced to the leather

[00:01:42] And you see it's not the pain I mind so much

[00:01:45] As I'm stretched out on the floor

[00:01:47] It's just the thought that I can't do my part

[00:01:50] That's what breaks my heart

[00:01:52] You see I'm just not man enough anymore

[00:01:57] Oh there are a lotta other things

[00:01:59] I could tell you

[00:02:00] That you'd marvel at and say

[00:02:03] Why I didn't know in those modern times

[00:02:06] They treated men that way but they do

[00:02:11] That's why I ask you do you think

[00:02:12] That God could turn with a sneer and frown

[00:02:15] At the men who die in the pen

[00:02:18] Do you think he'll turn us down

[00:02:22] I believe there's a heaven and a hell

[00:02:25] And in God I put my trust

[00:02:28] That's why I'm asking these questions

[00:02:30] I believe he's true and just

[00:02:34] And I just imagine he'll tell me

[00:02:36] As we meet at the golden stairs

[00:02:39] Hell's not just meant for some of the men

[00:02:42] Who die in the pen

[00:02:44] But for some who have mistreated them there

[00:02:50] You see we're paying for the mistakes

[00:02:52] We made in our sins

[00:02:54] As we've had our troubles in life

[00:02:56] Because we're the underdogs of humanity

[00:03:00] And surely God won't make us pay twice

[00:03:06] I believe on that day of judgement

[00:03:08] He'll have this convict called in

[00:03:11] And he'll say it's true hell's not for you

[00:03:16] You had your hell in the pen
