Dieseline Dreams

[00:00:05] I see him still ole Dribbler Bill, his frame as hard as gidgee,

[00:00:10] He drove the mail on Bridal Tracks in country soft & rigid,

[00:00:14] Never had too much to say but when he did was just a drawl,

[00:00:20] And ya’ kinda got the feelin', he'd be handy in a brawl.

[00:00:26] His Leyland truck was like ole Bill, gusty, rough and slow.

[00:00:31] He took that truck through country where a dozer wouldn't go,

[00:00:35] Yeah, but he's been bogged down tyre deep, back in Coober Hole,

[00:00:41] When others turned their trucks around and headed back for home.

[00:00:47] Now old Bill would do those little things for bush folk far from town,

[00:00:51] Had a memory like Sir Sydney, never wrote the items down,

[00:00:56] Newspapers he would put inside, mailbox on the ridge,

[00:01:02] And every stop along the way, had somethin' for the kids.

[00:01:08] He was seen to be a lonely man like one deprived of luck,

[00:01:13] An outward sign did only make was that old Leyland truck,

[00:01:17] He'd caress that smooth ole steerin' wheel, ease along the track,

[00:01:24] The last words that I heard him say was, "See ya later Jack."

[00:01:40] Now the mail still serves the far outback, the jobs they handle fine,

[00:01:44] But mem'ries dwell on Dribbler Bill way back in '39,

[00:01:49] I remember every mail night, the excitement and the thrill,

[00:01:55] As we sat outside and waited for the likes of Dribbler Bill.

[00:02:00] Oh, there's many times he helped us out when tucker got real slack.

[00:02:05] Like fresh meat from the bullocks secured from somewhere up the track,

[00:02:09] Yeah, great old man was Dribbler Bill the kind who’d always stick,

[00:02:15] And he'd risk his life without a thought for the needy and the sick. Hey!

[00:02:27] Now I'd like to think that Dribbler Bill still has the wheel in hand,

[00:02:32] Pushin' that old Leyland truck throughout that channel land,

[00:02:36] Should there be no trucks in heaven, it’s a halo to a pup,

[00:02:42] Just give old Bill a day or two and he'll start a mail run up.
