[00:00:00] Friends this is Tex Ritter with a strange story about a soldier boy and a deck of cards

[00:00:05] During a North African campaign a bunch of soldier boys

[00:00:08] Had been on a long hike and they arrived in a little town called

[00:00:11] Casino

[00:00:12] The next morning being Sunday several of the boys went to church

[00:00:16] Sargent commanded the boys in church

[00:00:18] And after the Chaplain had read the prayer the text was taken up next

[00:00:22] Those of the boys who had a prayer book

[00:00:24] Took them out

[00:00:25] But this one boy only had a deck of cards and so he spread

[00:00:28] Them out

[00:00:29] The Sergeant saw the cards and said

[00:00:31] Soldier put away those cards

[00:00:33] After the services were over the soldier was taken prisoner and

[00:00:36] Brought before the Provost Marshall

[00:00:38] The Marshall said Sargent

[00:00:40] Why have you brought this man here

[00:00:42] For playing cards in church sir

[00:00:44] And what have you to say for yourself son

[00:00:46] Much sir replied the soldier

[00:00:49] The Marshall said I hope so for if not

[00:00:51] I shall punish you more than any man was ever punished

[00:00:54] The soldier said Sir

[00:00:56] I have been on a march for about six days

[00:00:58] And I had neither Bible nor Prayer Book

[00:01:00] But I hope to satisfy you Sir with the purity of my intentions

[00:01:04] With that the boy started his story

[00:01:06] You see Sir when I look at the Ace

[00:01:08] It reminds me that there is but one God

[00:01:10] And deuce reminds me that the Bible is divided into two parts

[00:01:13] The Old and New Testaments

[00:01:15] And when I see the trey I think of the Father

[00:01:17] The son and Holy Ghost

[00:01:19] When I see the four I think of the four evangelist preached the Gospel

[00:01:23] There was Matthew Mark Luke and John

[00:01:26] And when I see the five it reminds me of the five wise virgins

[00:01:29] Who trimmed their lamps

[00:01:30] Ten of 'em five who were wise and were saved

[00:01:33] Five were foolish and were shut out

[00:01:35] And when I see the six it reminds me

[00:01:37] That in six days God made this great heaven and earth

[00:01:40] And when I see the seven it reminds me that on the seventh day

[00:01:43] God rested from His great work

[00:01:46] When I see the eight I think of the eight righteous persons

[00:01:48] God saved when he destroyed this earth

[00:01:51] There was Noah his wife their three sons and their wives

[00:01:54] And when I see the nine I think of the lepers our Savior cleansed

[00:01:57] And nine of the ten didn't even thank Him

[00:02:00] When I see the ten I think of the Ten Commandments God

[00:02:02] Handed down the Moses on a tablet of stone

[00:02:05] When I see the King it reminds me that there is

[00:02:08] But one King of Heaven God Almighty

[00:02:11] And when I see the queen I think of the Blessed Virgin Mary

[00:02:14] Who is Queen of Heaven

[00:02:16] And the jacks or knave it's the devil

[00:02:18] And when I count the number of spots on a deck of cards

[00:02:21] I find three hundred sixty-five the number of days in a year

[00:02:24] Fifty-two cards the number of weeks in a year

[00:02:27] Four suits the number of weeks in a month

[00:02:29] Twelve picture cards the number of months in a year

[00:02:33] Thirteen tricks the number of weeks in a quarter

[00:02:36] So you see Sir

[00:02:38] My pack of cards serve me as a Bible almanac and prayer book

[00:02:43] Friends I know this story is true because I knew that soldier
