Lawson’s Ghost (1996 Digital Remaster)

[00:00:00] Lawson's Ghost (1996 Digital Remaster) - Slim Dusty

[00:00:01] Composed by:Alexander Roland Cormack/Stan Coster

[00:00:03] As I sat beside the campfire late last evening

[00:00:09] My old blue dog he lay close by of course

[00:00:15] All was quiet except for bells and hobbles jingling

[00:00:21] And my horses fed along the watercourse

[00:00:28] You know the way a campfire makes you drowsy

[00:00:33] As you sit alone and gaze into it's glow

[00:00:40] I must have drifted off and started dreaming

[00:00:46] And how I wish that dream was really so

[00:00:53] Up to my fireside walked a weary swagman

[00:00:57] He said good night and dropped his bluey down

[00:01:01] And from his waterbag he filled his billy

[00:01:05] And while it boiled he squatted on the ground

[00:01:08] He filled his pipe and lit it from the fire

[00:01:12] And in the glow his face I plainly saw

[00:01:16] A face with lines of care and eyes of sadness

[00:01:20] And I wondered where I'd seen that face before

[00:01:24] He said his name was Lawson Henry Lawson

[00:01:28] And reached inside his tuckerbag for tea

[00:01:32] And threw a handful in his battered billy

[00:01:36] He filled two mugs and handed one to me

[00:01:40] He told me that he'd had a spell from trampin'

[00:01:44] And been resting in place called paradise

[00:01:48] I'd said I'd never been there though I'd travelled

[00:01:52] And seldom ever trod the same track twice

[00:01:56] He said he'd noticed things had little altered

[00:02:00] From what they were a hundred years ago

[00:02:04] He noticed precious water from the darling

[00:02:08] Still wasted in the ocean far below

[00:02:12] He puffed his pipe awhile and muttered something

[00:02:16] That sounded like the storm that is to come

[00:02:20] He spoke about the drought and desolation

[00:02:24] Amazed that men of office are still as dumb

[00:02:45] A curlew screeching overhead awoke me

[00:02:49] I stirred the fire and put the billy on

[00:02:54] I just remembered then the old sundowner

[00:02:57] And when I looked his swag and he were gone

[00:03:01] Was it really Lawson's ghost that came to see me

[00:03:05] Or just a dream in my subconscious mind

[00:03:09] Oh I'll never know the answer to that question

[00:03:13] Till I've left this living world behind

[00:03:17] Then I thought about this Lawson Henry Lawson

[00:03:21] And all at once it hit me with a rush

[00:03:25] He was the man who made his name immortal

[00:03:28] And immortalized this country in his verse

[00:03:32] He was the poet of the people the common people

[00:03:36] And he fought their 'cause with magic of his pen

[00:03:40] And when sad alone and destitute he left us

[00:03:44] He bore no ill to us his fellow men

[00:03:48] And now in afterlife to all his greatness

[00:03:52] A lasting monument that's carved in stone

[00:03:56] Looks down upon some street where once he wandered

[00:04:00] Hungry sad and worst of all alone

[00:04:04] And from each ten dollar bill that now is printed

[00:04:08] There looks at us his homely friendly dial

[00:04:11] And he leans upon some haloed bar up yonder

[00:04:15] I can almost see him smile his quiet smile
