The Man Who Picked The WIldwood Flower

[00:00:00] Let me tell you about a song

[00:00:02] That was brought to me by a good friend of mine

[00:00:05] Who's a good songwriter

[00:00:06] And everytime he brings me a song

[00:00:08] I'm always willing to listen

[00:00:09] But the story and the reasons

[00:00:11] For writing this song

[00:00:13] Were even more interesting to me than the song

[00:00:17] The old friend and fella

[00:00:18] I'm speaking of is Tommy Collins

[00:00:21] Tommy told me about an experience

[00:00:22] He had when he was a minister

[00:00:24] Where he was called to preach

[00:00:26] A funeral for a man with no identity

[00:00:29] Tommy said he never forgot the way he felt

[00:00:32] Like here is a human being

[00:00:35] Who someone must have loved at sometime

[00:00:38] And yet there was no one present to pay respect

[00:00:41] Just a couple of grave diggers

[00:00:42] A funeral man and Tommy

[00:00:46] Then the story switched to another

[00:00:47] Thought bout during his last visit to Nashville

[00:00:50] He went down to listen to an ole street singer

[00:00:53] That he always made a point to

[00:00:54] Go hear each time he was in town

[00:00:57] And it was then that Tommy discovered

[00:00:59] That Jack Dupree the ole

[00:01:01] Street singer had passed away

[00:01:04] And Tommy said he wondered

[00:01:06] How many were present at Jack's funeral

[00:01:09] And it was these two true to life incidents

[00:01:12] That inspired this song

[00:01:18] I only saw five people

[00:01:21] When they buried Jack Dupree

[00:01:24] Two diggers and the preacher

[00:01:26] The funeral man and me

[00:01:29] The pray was said and the hole was filled

[00:01:32] In less than half an hour

[00:01:34] And I said goodbye to the little man

[00:01:37] Who picked the wildwood flower

[00:01:41] For twenty years I'd seen him on

[00:01:44] The lower Nashville streets

[00:01:46] They said he always earned

[00:01:49] Enough to buy his clothes and eats

[00:01:52] He'd stop awhile and check his watch

[00:01:54] With the big clock on the tower

[00:01:57] That's when I asked him once

[00:01:59] If he could pick the wildwood flower

[00:02:04] He always drew a crowd

[00:02:06] Because he put on such a show

[00:02:09] He'd dance and sing and play

[00:02:11] And smile just like a polished pro

[00:02:14] And everytime he saw me standing in the crowd

[00:02:20] I knew the tune

[00:02:21] That he'd play next would be the wildwood flower

[00:02:26] I told him once that he could be

[00:02:29] What people call a star

[00:02:32] And he said why boy I'm happy

[00:02:35] How many of them folks are

[00:02:37] I'd hate to have to force a smile

[00:02:40] And feel myself turn sour

[00:02:42] There ain't no put on in my face

[00:02:45] When I pick the wildwood flower

[00:02:52] Then I saw a thousand people

[00:02:54] As they begin to come

[00:02:57] Business men and opry stars party girls and bums

[00:03:02] And on that little mound of

[00:03:05] Clay bouquets begin to shower

[00:03:07] As they paid respect to the little man

[00:03:10] Who picked the wildwood flower
