Sweeney(1996 Digital Remaster)

[00:00:00] Sweeney - Slim Dusty

[00:00:01] Written by:Slim Dusty/Henry Lawson

[00:00:03] It was somewhere in september

[00:00:05] And the sun was goin' down

[00:00:08] When I came in search of coffee

[00:00:11] To a darling river town

[00:00:15] Come and have a drink we'll call it

[00:00:18] Tis a fitting name I think

[00:00:20] And was raining

[00:00:21] For a wonder up at

[00:00:23] Come and have a drink

[00:00:27] Underneath the pub verander

[00:00:30] I was resting on a bunk

[00:00:32] When a stranger Rose before me

[00:00:35] And he said that he was drunk

[00:00:39] He apologised for speaking

[00:00:42] There was no offence he swore

[00:00:45] But he somehow seemed to fancy that

[00:00:47] He'd seen my face before

[00:00:52] He agreed you can't remember

[00:00:54] All the chaps you chance to meet

[00:00:57] And he said his name was Sweeney

[00:00:59] People lived in sussex street

[00:01:03] He was camping in a stable

[00:01:06] That he swore that he was right

[00:01:09] Only for the blanky horses

[00:01:11] Walkin' over him all night

[00:01:16] He'd apparently been fighting

[00:01:18] For his face was black and blue

[00:01:21] And it looked as though the horses

[00:01:23] Had been treading on him too

[00:01:28] But an honest genial twinkle

[00:01:30] In the eye that wasn't hurt

[00:01:33] Seemed to hint of something better

[00:01:35] Spite of drink and rags and dirt

[00:01:40] He was born in parramatta

[00:01:42] And he said with humour grim

[00:01:45] That he'd like to see the city

[00:01:47] Ever liquor finished him

[00:01:52] But he couldn't raise the money

[00:01:54] He was d**ned if he could think

[00:01:57] What the government was doing here

[00:02:00] He offered me a drink

[00:02:04] I declined was self denial

[00:02:06] And I lectured him on booze

[00:02:09] Using all the hackneyed arguments

[00:02:12] That preachers mostly use

[00:02:16] Things I'd heard in temperance lectures

[00:02:19] I was young and rather green

[00:02:21] And I ended by referring to the man

[00:02:25] He might have been

[00:02:28] But he couldn't stay to argue

[00:02:31] For his beer was nearly gone

[00:02:33] He was glad

[00:02:34] He said to meet me

[00:02:36] And he'd see me later on

[00:02:40] But he guessed he'd have to go

[00:02:42] And get his bottle filled again

[00:02:45] And he gave a lurch and vanished in the

[00:02:48] Darkness and the rain

[00:02:53] And the afternoons in cities

[00:02:56] When the rain is on

[00:02:57] The land

[00:02:59] Visions come to me of Sweeney

[00:03:01] With his bottle in

[00:03:03] His hand
