American Dreamers - Old Home Movie

[00:00:00] American Dreamers - Old Home Movie - Goran Bregovic

[00:00:00] One thing I was sure of

[00:00:02] That my uncle Leo was definitely the hero of my childhood

[00:00:07] The smell of his old spice cologne carried me

[00:00:09] Back into that lost childhood more than the home movies did

[00:00:13] My uncle didn't know it but it was the sweet

[00:00:16] Cheap smell of car dealers that took me back

[00:00:18] And made me dissolve into a dream of the past

[00:00:22] Leo was the last dinosaur that smelled of cheap cologne

[00:00:26] And he believed in the American dream

[00:00:29] I was crazy about him because he believed in miracles

[00:00:32] And Even though he lived inside of life and sold Cadillacs

[00:00:36] He always looked like a ten-year-old boy whose sleeves were too long

[00:00:41] When I was ten Leo gave me this great movie camera

[00:00:44] And my mother always hoped I'd become the next Milton Berle

[00:00:47] But dreams of houses and cars and fresh-cut lawns

[00:00:50] Aren't dreams when they become real

[00:00:52] And somehow I understood what my mother

[00:00:55] Meant by good morning Columbus

[00:00:57] And even if my mother didn't like

[00:00:58] What I was doing with my life

[00:01:01] I think she'd understand

[00:01:06] When I was 11 I got this really weird earache

[00:01:08] That wouldn't go away

[00:01:10] I went to about a hundred doctors

[00:01:12] But none of them could help me

[00:01:13] So what Leo did was he went into Mexico

[00:01:16] And brought back this fat lady witch doctor

[00:01:18] Who did this mumbo-jumbo and fixed me right up

[00:01:21] I was grateful but somehow I thought

[00:01:23] I might've been better off mute

[00:01:26] All in all I had a very happy childhood

[00:01:29] My father was a border guard who spent most of his life

[00:01:31] Trying to keep people from crossing lines

[00:01:34] Every night for 15 years he'd go out and smooth

[00:01:36] Down the road between Mexico and Arizona

[00:01:39] And every morning he'd be out there

[00:01:40] Looking for footprints in the dirt

[00:01:43] But my father always said that work was like a hat

[00:01:45] You put on your head

[00:01:46] And even if you didn't have pants

[00:01:48] You didn't have to walk

[00:01:48] Down the street ashamed of your a*s

[00:01:50] So long as you had a hat

[00:03:06] And if somebody was to ask me

[00:03:07] Why I don't get up right now

[00:03:08] And take the next train back to New York

[00:03:11] It's because you can't say no to your childhood hero

[00:03:14] I decided to be his best man

[00:03:16] But one thing I was sure of

[00:03:18] No matter how much I loved the smell of cheap cologne

[00:03:21] I was never going to become my uncle

[00:03:24] And I was never going to sell Cadillacs
