The Ugly One with the Jewels(Live)

[00:00:00] The Ugly One With The Jewels (Live) - Laurie Anderson

[00:00:11] In 1974 I went to Mexico to visit my brother who

[00:00:17] Was working as an anthropologist with Tsutsil Indians

[00:00:21] The last surviving Mayan tribe

[00:00:26] And the Tsutsil speak a lovely birdlike language

[00:00:31] And are quite tiny physically;

[00:00:33] I towered over them

[00:00:36] Mostly I spent my days following the women around

[00:00:41] Since my brother wasn't really allowed to do this

[00:00:45] We got up at 3am and began to

[00:00:48] Separate the corn into three colors

[00:00:52] And we boiled it ran to the mill and back

[00:00:55] And finally started to make the tortillas

[00:00:59] Now all the other women's tortillas were 360

[00:01:04] Perfectly toasted perfectly round;

[00:01:08] And after a lot of

[00:01:09] Practice mine were still lobe-sided and charred

[00:01:16] And when they thought I wasn't looking

[00:01:20] They threw them to the dogs

[00:01:24] After breakfast we spent the rest of the day down

[00:01:27] At the river watching the goats and braiding

[00:01:31] And unbraiding each other's hair

[00:01:34] So usually there wasn't that much to report

[00:01:38] One day the women decided to braid

[00:01:41] My hair Tsutsil-style

[00:01:44] After they did this I saw my reflection in a puddle

[00:01:50] I looked ridiculous but they said

[00:01:55] “Before we did this you were ugly but now

[00:02:02] Maybe you will find a husband ”

[00:02:10] I lived within in a yurt a thatched structure

[00:02:15] Shaped like a cob cake

[00:02:17] And there's a central fireplace ringed by sleeping

[00:02:21] Shelves sort of like a dry beaver down

[00:02:27] Now my Tsutsil name was Lausha

[00:02:31] Which loosely translated means

[00:02:34] The ugly one with the jewels

[00:02:39] Now ugly OK I was awfully tall by local standards

[00:02:46] But what did they mean by the jewels

[00:02:53] I didn't find out what this meant until one night

[00:02:57] When I was taking my contact lenses out

[00:03:00] And since I'd lost the case I was carefully

[00:03:03] Placing them on the sleeping shelf;

[00:03:07] Suddenly I noticed that everyone was staring at me

[00:03:12] And I realized that none of the

[00:03:14] Tsutsil had ever seen glasses

[00:03:16] Much less contacts and that these were

[00:03:20] The jewels the transparent

[00:03:25] Perfectly round jewels that

[00:03:29] I carefully hid on the shelf

[00:03:31] At night and then put for safekeeping

[00:03:36] Into my eyes every morning

[00:03:42] So I may have been ugly but so what

[00:03:52] I had the jewels

[00:04:06] Full fathom thy father lies

[00:04:13] Of his bones are coral made

[00:04:20] Those are pearls that were his eyes

[00:04:27] Nothing of him that doth fade

[00:04:33] But that suffers a sea change

[00:04:41] Into something rich and strange

[00:04:49] And I alone am left to tell the tale

[00:04:57] Call me Ishmael
