[00:00:28] Several of the boys went to church. A

[00:00:31] Sargent commanded the boys in church,

[00:00:33] And after the Chaplain had read the

[00:00:35] Prayer the text was taken up next..

[00:00:38] Those of the boys who had a prayer book

[00:00:41] Took them out, but this one boy

[00:00:42] Only had a deck of cards, and so he spread

[00:00:45] Them out.

[00:00:46] The Sergeant saw the cards and said,

[00:00:48] "Soldier, put away those cards."

[00:00:52] After the services were over the soldier

[00:00:53] Was taken prisoner and brought

[00:00:55] Before the Provost Marshall.

[00:00:55] The Marshall said, "Sargent,

[00:00:59] Why have you brought this man here?"

[00:01:01] "For playing cards in church, sir."

[00:01:04] "And what have you to say for yourself, son?"

[00:01:06] "Much, sir." replied the soldier.

[00:01:09] 'The Marshall said, "I hope so, for if not ,

[00:01:13] I shall punish you more than

[00:01:14] Any man was ever punished."

[00:01:17] The soldier said, "Sir ,

[00:01:20] I have been on a march for about six days,

[00:01:23] And I had neither Bible nor Prayer Book,

[00:01:26] But I hope to satisfy you,

[00:01:28] Sir, with the purity of my intentions."

[00:01:32] With that the boy started his story.

[00:01:44] "You see, Sir, when I look at the Ace it

[00:01:47] Reminds me that there is but one God.

[00:01:52] The deuce reminds me that the Bible is

[00:01:54] Divided into two parts; the Old and New Testaments.

[00:01:58] And when I see the trey I think of

[00:02:00] The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

[00:02:04] When I see the four I think of the

[00:02:06] Four evangelist who preached the Gospel.

[00:02:09] There was Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

[00:02:13] And when I see the five it reminds me

[00:02:15] Of the five wise virgins who trimmed their lamps.

[00:02:19] Ten of 'em; five who were wise and were saved;

[00:02:23] Five were foolish and were shut out.

[00:02:27] And when I see the six it

[00:02:29] Reminds me that in six days

[00:02:30] God made this great heaven and earth.

[00:02:34] And when

[00:02:34] I see the seven it reminds me that

[00:02:37] On the seventh day God rested from His

[00:02:39] Great work. When I see the eight I think

[00:02:42] Of the eight righteous persons God saved

[00:02:45] When he destroyed this earth. There was Noah,

[00:02:48] His wife,their three sons, and their wives.

[00:02:53] And when I see the nine I think of the

[00:02:55] Lepers our Savior cleansed , and nine of the ten

[00:02:58] Didn't even thank Him. When I see the ten I think

[00:03:03] Of the Ten Commandments God handed down to

[00:03:08] Moses on a tablet of stone. When I see the King

[00:03:14] It reminds me that there is but one King of Heaven,

[00:03:18] God Almighty. And when I see the queen I think

[00:03:22] Of the Blessed Virgin Mary who is Queen of Heaven.

[00:03:27] And the jacks, or knaves, it's the devil. And when

[00:03:33] I count the number of spots on a deck of cards

[00:03:36] I find three hundred sixty-five

[00:03:37] The number of days in a year.

[00:03:40] Fifty-two cards, the number of weeks in a year.

[00:03:47] Thirteen tricks, the number of weeks in a quarter.

[00:03:49] Four suits, the number of weeks in a month.

[00:03:53] Twelve picture cards, the number of months in a year.

[00:03:59] So you see, Sir, my pack of cards

[00:04:02] Serve me as a Bible, almanac, and prayer book."
