Sweet Sixteen

[00:00:00] Sweet Sixteen - Judy Garland

[00:00:10] For fifteen years I've played a waiting game

[00:00:14] I've suffered like they do in Russian plays

[00:00:20] But if what's in store is really what they claim

[00:00:24] I must admit that suffering really pays

[00:00:31] For fifteen years I've been just like a prisoner in a cell

[00:00:37] For fifteen years my life has been just - awful

[00:00:45] From one to four was such a bore

[00:00:47] I remember how I hated having all those people

[00:00:49] Paw all over me and talk baby talk

[00:00:51] They'd say goo-goo isn't she cunning

[00:00:54] Poor dear she has her father's nose

[00:00:56] Ah-tic-a-tic-a-tic-a-tic-a-tic-a

[00:00:58] The years from five to eight I hate

[00:01:01] I've grown into a very unattractive child

[00:01:04] And consequently was utterly and completely ignored

[00:01:07] But I didn't really mind

[00:01:09] I had a book of Mother Goose and Mother Goose is pretty

[00:01:12] Hot stuff when you're five years old

[00:01:14] At nine I had the measles so that didn't count

[00:01:18] At ten I'd reached the performing stage

[00:01:23] And at the drop of a hat mother

[00:01:25] Would call me in and have me sing

[00:01:27] The Rosary for her guests

[00:01:28] I never will forget how papa used to squirm

[00:01:29] When I hit that high note

[00:01:31] From eleven to thirteen I'd rather not speak of

[00:01:35] It was bad enough having

[00:01:36] Jimmy Doogan pull my hair in school

[00:01:37] But it was positively humiliating

[00:01:38] To have my own mother

[00:01:40] Refer to me as her dear little ugly duckling

[00:01:45] At fourteen I had my first taste of romance

[00:01:50] It was at a party at dancing school

[00:01:52] And he was younger than I was shorter than I was

[00:02:00] Oh but he had a wonderful name - Archibold

[00:02:04] And he really like me too

[00:02:07] Really he did but I had to go and spoil it all

[00:02:09] I asked him right out if he'd be my best beau

[00:02:13] That was the last I ever saw of him

[00:02:16] By now I was fifteen and pretty miserable

[00:02:19] Mother refused to let me wear any lipstick

[00:02:21] Or rouge and I went around looking as pale as death

[00:02:26] It was then that I decided to join the monastary

[00:02:29] And I would have too if it hadn't been for Bing Crosby

[00:02:34] I was afraid they wouldn't have any radios in manastaries

[00:02:38] So I devoted my fifteenth year to Kraft cheese

[00:02:43] But now it's a different story I can brush away the tears

[00:02:49] And lau-augh at those awful fifteen years

[00:02:55] For now I'm

[00:03:00] Sweet Sixteen and I've got my first long dress

[00:03:07] I can even have a date one night a week

[00:03:13] I can paint my lips a little and rouge my cheeks

[00:03:18] I'm sweet sixteen but I really must confess

[00:03:25] Although this grown up life isn't simple

[00:03:32] I wouldn't change places with Shirley Temple

[00:03:37] Gee it's great to be just as free as the birds - above me

[00:03:46] I'm a Juliet out to get a Romeo to love me

[00:03:53] I ask you please forget that I was an in-between

[00:04:02] I mean my flags unfurled I'm a woman of the world

[00:04:09] I'm sweet sixteen
