Sweeney(1998 Remaster)

[00:00:01] Sweeney (1998 Digital Remaster) - Slim Dusty

[00:00:05] It was somewhere in September

[00:00:08] And the sun was going down

[00:00:10] When I came in search of coffee

[00:00:13] To a Darling River town

[00:00:17] Come And Have A Drink

[00:00:18] We'll call it is a fitting name I think

[00:00:22] And twas raining for a wonder

[00:00:24] Up at Come And Have A Drink

[00:00:29] Underneath the pub verandah

[00:00:31] I was resting on a bunk

[00:00:34] When a stranger rose before me

[00:00:36] And he said that he was drunk

[00:00:40] He apologised for speaking

[00:00:43] There was no offence he swore

[00:00:45] But he somehow seemed to fancy

[00:00:47] That he'd seen my face before

[00:00:52] He agreed you can't remember

[00:00:54] All the chaps you chance to meet

[00:00:57] And he said his name was Sweeney

[00:00:59] People lived in Sussex Street

[00:01:03] He was camping in a stable

[00:01:06] That he swore that he was right

[00:01:08] Only for the blanky horses

[00:01:11] Walking over him all night

[00:01:15] He'd apparently been fighting

[00:01:18] For his face was black and blue

[00:01:20] And it looked as though

[00:01:21] The horses had been treading on him too

[00:01:27] But an honest genial twinkle

[00:01:29] In the eye that wasn't hurt

[00:01:31] Seemed to hint of something better

[00:01:34] Spite of drink and rags and dirt

[00:01:43] He was born in Parramatta

[00:01:46] And he said with humour grim

[00:01:48] That he'd like to see the city

[00:01:51] Are the liquor finished him

[00:01:55] But he couldn't raise the money

[00:01:57] He was damned if he could think

[00:02:00] What the Government was doing here

[00:02:03] He offered me a drink

[00:02:06] I declined twas self denial

[00:02:09] And I lectured him on booze

[00:02:11] Using all the hackneyed arguments

[00:02:14] That preachers mostly use

[00:02:18] Things I'd heard in temperance lectures

[00:02:21] I was young and rather green

[00:02:23] And I ended

[00:02:24] By referring to the man he might have been

[00:02:30] But he couldn't stay to argue

[00:02:32] For his beer was nearly gone

[00:02:35] He was glad he said to meet me

[00:02:37] And he'd see me later on

[00:02:41] But he guessed he'd have to go

[00:02:43] And get his bottle filled again

[00:02:46] And he gave a lurch

[00:02:48] And vanished in the darkness and the rain

[00:02:54] Now of afternoons in cities

[00:02:57] When the rain is on the land

[00:02:59] Visions come to me of Sweeney

[00:03:02] With his bottle in his hand
