Sweet Sixteen

[00:00:00] Rock-a-Bye Baby - Betty Carter

[00:00:09] For fifteen years I've played a waiting game

[00:00:14] I've suffered like they do in Russian plays

[00:00:20] But if what's in store is really what they claim

[00:00:25] I must admit that suffering really pays

[00:00:31] For fifteen years I've been just like a prisoner in a cell

[00:00:36] For fifteen years my life has been just - awful

[00:00:43] From one to four was such a bore

[00:00:46] I remember how I hated having all those people

[00:00:49] Paw all over me and talk baby talk

[00:00:50] They'd say goo-goo isn't she cunning

[00:00:53] Poor dear she has her father's nose

[00:00:55] Ah-tic-a-tic-a-tic-a-tic-a-tic-a

[00:00:57] The years from five to eight I hate

[00:01:00] I've grown into a very unattractive child

[00:01:02] And consequently was utterly and completely ignored

[00:01:06] But I didn't really mind

[00:01:08] I had a book of Mother Goose

[00:01:10] And Mother Goose is pretty

[00:01:11] Hot stuff when you're five years old

[00:01:13] At nine I had the measles so that didn't count

[00:01:17] At ten I'd reached the performing stage

[00:01:21] And at the drop of a hat mother would

[00:01:23] Call me in and have me sing

[00:01:24] The Rosary for her guests

[00:01:26] I never will forget how papa used to squirm

[00:01:28] When I hit that high note

[00:01:30] From eleven to thirteen I'd rather not speak of

[00:01:33] It was bad enough having Jimmy Doogan

[00:01:35] Pull my hair in school

[00:01:36] But it was positively humiliating to have my own mother

[00:01:39] Refer to me as her dear little ugly duckling

[00:01:43] At fourteen I had my first taste of romance

[00:01:48] It was at a party at dancing school

[00:01:51] And he was younger than I was shorter than I was

[00:01:58] Oh but he had a wonderful name - Archibold

[00:02:02] And he really like me too

[00:02:03] Really he did but I had to go and spoil it all

[00:02:07] I asked him right out if he'd be my best beau

[00:02:10] That was the last I ever saw of him

[00:02:14] By now I was fifteen and pretty miserable

[00:02:18] Mother refused to let me wear any lipstick

[00:02:19] Or rouge and I went around looking as pale as death

[00:02:25] It was then that I decided to join the monastary

[00:02:27] And I would have too if it hadn't been for Bing Crosby

[00:02:33] I was afraid they wouldn't have any radios in manastaries

[00:02:37] So I devoted my fifteenth year to Kraft cheese

[00:02:41] But now it's a different story I can brush away the tears

[00:02:47] And lau-augh at those awful fifteen years

[00:02:52] For now I'm

[00:02:56] Sweet Sixteen and I've got my first long dress

[00:03:04] I can even have a date one night a week

[00:03:10] I can paint my lips a little and rouge my cheeks

[00:03:15] I'm sweet sixteen but I really must confess

[00:03:23] Although this grown up life isn't simple

[00:03:29] I wouldn't change places with Shirley Temple

[00:03:34] Gee it's great to be just as free as the birds - above me

[00:03:43] I'm a Juliet out to get a Romeo to love me

[00:03:51] I ask you please forget that I was an in-between

[00:03:59] I mean my flags unfurled I'm a woman of the world

[00:04:06] I'm sweet sixteen
