Grandfather Johnson (1996 Remaster)

[00:00:00] Friends most of my bush ballards are based on true stories

[00:00:05] I'd like to sing for you now

[00:00:07] A story that is one hundred percent true

[00:00:10] Because I know the family

[00:00:12] That grandfather Johnson lived with

[00:00:14] And like most bush ballards and story songs

[00:00:17] These ballards explain themselves as they move along

[00:00:22] Here is the true story of Grandfather Johnson

[00:00:31] Grandfather Johnson was an old blackman

[00:00:36] From a real proud race of men

[00:00:41] When he was a child he heard them tell of butchers creek

[00:00:46] And the story was old even then

[00:00:51] How the white man came and took over the land

[00:00:56] And the blood of the blackman mixed with white

[00:01:02] But grandfather Johnson was a fullblood man

[00:01:07] Proud of his people and their rights

[00:01:12] Now grandfather Johnson was a tribal man

[00:01:17] He knew all the old hunting ways

[00:01:22] He knew how to wield the nulla throw the killer boomerang

[00:01:27] And he'd entertain the tourists everyday

[00:01:32] And grandfather Johnson had a brand new suit

[00:01:37] A new hat for his snowy headed crown

[00:01:42] But whenever the tourists where about to arrive

[00:01:47] He would change into his old hand me downs

[00:01:52] When I asked him the reason he said son you ought to know

[00:01:57] My old working clothes look better for the part

[00:02:02] I'm just old grandfather Johnson making boomerangs for sale

[00:02:07] I'd lose business if I went around looking smart

[00:02:13] So he sold them boomerangs and taught them to throw

[00:02:18] And they bragged for months of seeing the real thing

[00:02:23] When they'd gone grandpa dressed up

[00:02:26] Took his money from a bag

[00:02:28] And smiled as he paid cash for a new gold ring

[00:02:38] He would always bail me up when we met in town

[00:02:43] And he'd bite me for some money or a smoke

[00:02:48] Oh but I can't forget the day I had to tell grandfather

[00:02:54] I was sorry but I was stoney broke

[00:02:59] He just nodded and emptied out his pockets

[00:03:04] The notes and the silver flowed apace

[00:03:09] With a twinkle in his eye he shoved the money in my hand

[00:03:14] And laughed at the look upon my face

[00:03:22] Well grandfather Johnson died one year on walkabout

[00:03:27] In a strange land alone in the dark

[00:03:32] No one new his name or knew from where he came

[00:03:37] They just found him dead one morning in the park

[00:03:42] And they buried grandpa Johnson as a pauper

[00:03:47] It was months and months before I even new

[00:03:52] I gave his money to the hungry clothes to the poor

[00:03:57] And his story I'm giving to you

[00:04:02] And his story I'm giving to you
