They’re Tearin’ The Labor Camps Down

[00:03:31] I guess it's no secret eh that I did a few years in San Quentin

[00:03:31] And on my release I noticed that a lot of different things had come to pass

[00:03:31] While I was out of circulation

[00:03:31] Like the girls dresses were shorter and the freeways were wider

[00:03:31] And the ole steam engines were gone forever

[00:03:31] But the one thing I noticed most of all down through the San Joachin valley

[00:03:31] Was the disapperance of so many labor camps

[00:03:31] Where once I'd lived from time to time myself

[00:03:31] I noticed that that one there at Houston California was gone

[00:03:31] And the ole crown's camp that lie between Formosa and Bakersfield

[00:03:31] Was just a barren spot with a few cottonwood trees

[00:03:31] And surrounded by an olive orchard

[00:03:31] Tho a few still remain like the ole blackburn's camp out on weepatch highway

[00:03:31] It was an evident fact that someone was tryin' to do away with them all

[00:03:31] And I couldn't help but wonder what's gonna happen to the farm workers

[00:03:31] And the fruit pickers who move from town to town

[00:03:31] The man with the big family who can't afford the ole high standard of livin'

[00:03:31] And was these thoughts and my mem'ries that inspired me to write this song

[00:03:31] I came back to this ole town cause my home was here

[00:03:31] And to try to find some things I'd left behind

[00:03:31] Tho' I've only been away for just a few short years

[00:03:31] But I'd forgot about the pace of modern times

[00:03:31] I saw changes all around me and some were good

[00:03:31] But I hardly recognized my side of town

[00:03:31] They tore down the swingin' casing from the cottowood

[00:03:31] And that tree was all that marked familar ground

[00:03:31] Oh they're tearin' the labor camps down

[00:03:31] And I feel a little sentimental shame

[00:03:31] Where's a hungry man gonna live at in this town

[00:03:31] Oh they're tearin' the labor camps down

[00:03:31] [ piano

[00:03:31] The Hilltop family market had been moved somewhere

[00:03:31] And the name was changed to fit the newer homes

[00:03:31] The folks that I remember were no longer there

[00:03:31] And the cabin that my daddy built was gone

[00:03:31] Oh they're tearin' the labor camps down...

[00:03:31] They're tearin' the labor camps down...
