Old Sam’s Christmas Pudding

[00:00:01] Old Sam's Christmas Pudding - Stanley Holloway

[00:00:10] It was Christmas Day in the trenches

[00:00:13] In Spain in Penninsular War

[00:00:16] And Sam Small were cleaning his musket

[00:00:20] A thing as he'd nere done before

[00:00:23] They'd had'em inspected that morning

[00:00:26] And Sam had got into disgrace

[00:00:29] For when sergeant had looked down the barrel

[00:00:32] A sparrow flew out in his face

[00:00:35] The sergeant reported the matter

[00:00:38] To Lieutenant Bird then and there

[00:00:41] Said Lieutenant How very disgusting

[00:00:45] The Duke must be told of this ere

[00:00:49] The Duke were upset when he heard

[00:00:52] He said I'm astonished I am

[00:00:56] I must make a most drastic example

[00:00:59] There'll be no Christmas pudding for Sam

[00:01:03] When Sam were informed of his sentence

[00:01:07] Surprise rooted him to the spot

[00:01:11] Twas much worse than he had expected

[00:01:14] He thought as he'd only be shot

[00:01:17] And so he sat cleaning his musket

[00:01:21] And polishing barrel and butt

[00:01:24] While the pudding his mother had sent him

[00:01:28] Lay there in the mud at his foot

[00:01:31] Now the centre that Sam's lot were holding

[00:01:35] Ran around a place called Badajoz

[00:01:39] Where the Spaniards had put up a bastion

[00:01:43] And ooh what a bastion it was

[00:01:46] They pounded away all the morning

[00:01:49] With canister grape shot and ball

[00:01:52] But the face of the bastion defied them

[00:01:56] They made no impression at all

[00:01:59] They started again after dinner

[00:02:01] Bombarding as hard as they could

[00:02:04] And the Duke brought his own private cannon

[00:02:09] But that weren't a ha'pence o good

[00:02:12] The Duke said Sam put down thy musket

[00:02:16] And help me lay this gun true

[00:02:19] Sam answered You'd best ask your favours

[00:02:23] From them as you give pudding to

[00:02:26] The Duke looked at Sam so reproachful

[00:02:31] And don't take it that way said he

[00:02:35] Us Generals have got to be ruthless

[00:02:38] It hurts me more than it did thee

[00:02:42] Sam sniffed at these words kind of sceptic

[00:02:47] Then looked down the Duke's private gun

[00:02:50] And said We'd best put in two charges

[00:02:54] We'll never bust bastion with one

[00:02:58] He tipped cannon ball out of muzzle

[00:03:00] He took out the wadding and all

[00:03:03] He filled barrel chock full of powder

[00:03:06] Then picked up and replaced the ball

[00:03:09] He took a good aim at the bastion

[00:03:12] Then said Right o Duke let her fly

[00:03:16] The cannon nigh jumped off her trunnions

[00:03:20] And up went the bastion sky high

[00:03:26] The Duke he weren't alf elated

[00:03:30] He danced around trench full of glee

[00:03:33] And said Sam for this gallant action

[00:03:37] You can hot up your pudding for tea

[00:03:40] Sam looked round to pick up his pudding

[00:03:44] But it wasn't there nowhere about

[00:03:48] In the place where he thought he had left it

[00:03:51] Lay the cannon ball he'd just tipped out

[00:03:55] Sam saw in a flash what ad happened

[00:03:59] By an unprecedented mishap

[00:04:03] The pudding his mother had sent him

[00:04:06] Had blown Badajoz off map

[00:04:09] That's why fuisilliers wear to this moment

[00:04:14] A badge which they think's a grenade

[00:04:17] But they're wrong it's a brass reproduction

[00:04:21] Of the pudding Sam's mother once made
