The Streets of New York

[00:00:00] The Streets Of New York - The Wolfe Tones

[00:00:17] I was 18yrs old when

[00:00:19] I went down to Dublin with a fistful

[00:00:22] Of money and a cartload of dreams

[00:00:26] "Take your time" said me father

[00:00:28] Stop rushing like hell and remember

[00:00:31] All is not what it seems to be

[00:00:35] For there's fellas that would cut ye for

[00:00:38] The coat on yer back

[00:00:39] Or the watch that you got from your mother

[00:00:43] So take care me young bucko

[00:00:45] And mind yourself well and will ya give this

[00:00:48] Wee note to me brother

[00:00:51] At the time Uncle Benjy was a policeman in Brooklyn

[00:00:55] And me father the youngest looked after the farm

[00:01:00] When a phonecall from America said

[00:01:02] 'Send the lad over'

[00:01:04] And the oul fella said 'Sure wouldn't do any harm' for

[00:01:09] I've spent my life working this dirty old ground

[00:01:13] For a few pints of porter and the smell of a pound

[00:01:18] Sure maybe there's something you'll learn or you'll see

[00:01:21] And you can bring it back home make it easy on me

[00:01:29] So I landed at Kennedy and a big yellow taxi

[00:01:33] Carried me and me bags through the streets and the rain

[00:01:38] Well me poor heart was thumpin around with excitement

[00:01:42] And I hardly even heard what the driver was sayin

[00:01:47] We came in the Shore Parkway to the faltlands of Brooklyn

[00:01:51] To my Uncle's apartment on the East 53rd

[00:01:55] I was feeling so happy I was humming a song

[00:01:59] And I sang "You're as free as a bird"

[00:02:03] Well to shorten the story what

[00:02:05] I found out that day was that

[00:02:08] Benjy was shot down in an uptown foray and

[00:02:13] While I was flying my way to New York

[00:02:17] Poor Benjy was lying in a cold city morgue

[00:02:22] Well I phoned up the old fella told him the news

[00:02:26] I could tell he could

[00:02:27] Hardly stand up in his shoes and he wept as he told me

[00:02:32] 'Go ahead with the plans

[00:02:34] And not to forget be a proud Irish man'

[00:02:41] So I went to Nellies beside Fordham road and i started

[00:02:46] To learn about lifting the load

[00:02:50] But the heaviest thing that I carried that year

[00:02:54] Was the bittersweet thoughts of my hometown so dear

[00:02:59] I went home that December 'cause the oul fella died

[00:03:04] Had to borrow the money from Phil on the side

[00:03:08] And all the bright flowers and brass couldn't hide

[00:03:12] The poor wasted face of me father

[00:03:16] I sold up the oul farmyard for what

[00:03:19] It was worth and into my bag stuck

[00:03:22] A handful of earth then I boarded a train and

[00:03:27] I caught me a plane

[00:03:29] And I found meself back in the US again

[00:03:34] It's been 22yrs since

[00:03:36] I've set foot in Dublin

[00:03:39] Me kids know to use the correct knife and fork

[00:03:45] But I'll never forget the green grass and the rivers

[00:03:49] As I keep law and order in the streets of New York
