A Boy Named Sue(Live at The White House, Washington D.C., A)

[00:00:00] A Boy Named Sue(Live at The White House Washington D C A) - Johnny Cash

[00:00:09] My daddy left home when I was three

[00:00:12] And he didn't leave much to ma and me

[00:00:14] Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze

[00:00:19] Now I don't blame him cause he run and hid

[00:00:21] But the meanest thing that my dady ever did

[00:00:23] Was before he left he went and named me Sue

[00:00:27] Well he must of thought that is quite a joke

[00:00:30] And it got a lot of laughs from a lots of folk

[00:00:32] It seems I had to fight my whole life through

[00:00:37] Some gal would giggle and I'd get red

[00:00:39] And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head

[00:00:41] I tell ya life ain't easy for a boy named Sue

[00:00:46] Well I grew up quick and I grew up mean

[00:00:48] My fist got hard and my wits got keen

[00:00:50] I'd roam from town to town to hide my shame

[00:00:55] But I made a vow to the moon and stars

[00:00:57] That I'd search the honky-tonks and bars

[00:01:00] And kill that man who gave me that awful name

[00:01:04] Well it was Gatlinburg in mid-July

[00:01:06] And I just hit town and my throat was dry

[00:01:09] I thought I'd stop and have myself a brew

[00:01:13] At an old saloon on a street of mud

[00:01:16] There at a table dealing stud

[00:01:18] Sat the dirty mangy dog that named me Sue

[00:01:22] Well I knew that snake was my own sweet dad

[00:01:25] From a worn-out picture that my mother'd had

[00:01:27] And I knew that scar on his cheek

[00:01:29] And his evil eye

[00:01:32] He was big and bent and gray and old

[00:01:34] And I looked at him and my blood ran cold

[00:01:37] And I said My name is Sue How do you do

[00:01:41] Now your gonna die

[00:01:50] Well I hit him hard right between the eyes

[00:01:52] And he went down but to my surprise

[00:01:55] He come up with a knife and cut off a

[00:01:56] Piece of my ear

[00:01:59] But I busted a chair right across his teeth

[00:02:01] And we crashed through the wall and

[00:02:03] Into the street

[00:02:04] Kicking and gouging in the mud and

[00:02:06] The blood and the beer

[00:02:08] I tell ya I've fought tougher men

[00:02:10] But I really can't remember when

[00:02:13] He kicked like a mule and he bit

[00:02:15] Like a crocodile

[00:02:17] I heard him laugh and then I heard him cuss

[00:02:19] He went for his gun and I pulled mine first

[00:02:22] He stood there looking at me and

[00:02:24] I saw him smile

[00:02:26] And he said Son this world is rough

[00:02:28] And if a man's gonna make it

[00:02:29] He's gotta be tough

[00:02:30] And I knew I wouldn't be there to help you along

[00:02:34] So I give you that name and I said goodbye

[00:02:37] I knew you'd have to get tough or die

[00:02:39] And it's the name that helped to

[00:02:41] Make you strong

[00:02:43] He said Now you just fought one

[00:02:45] Hell of a fight

[00:02:46] And I know you hate me and you got the right

[00:02:48] To kill me now and I wouldn't blame you if you do

[00:02:53] But you ought to thank me before I die

[00:02:55] For the gravel in you guts and the spit in you eye

[00:02:57] Cause I'm the that named you Sue

[00:03:06] I got all choked up and I threw down my gun

[00:03:09] And I called him my pa and he called me his son

[00:03:11] And I came away with a different point of view

[00:03:15] And I think about him now and then

[00:03:17] Every time I try and every time I win

[00:03:20] And if I ever have a boy I guss

[00:03:22] I'm gonna call him

[00:03:23] George calder kim
