[00:00:00] St. Nick's Groove (LP版) - Nicole Mullen

[00:00:15] You know, lots of people

[00:00:16] Think that St. Nicholas is

[00:00:17] Just another name for Santa Claus.

[00:00:18] But Santa is also called Father Christmas,

[00:00:21] Kris Kringle, and some other names.

[00:00:25] But behind all of these names is a boy

[00:00:30] Who lived in what is now western Turkey

[00:00:32] About 1700 years ago.

[00:00:33] His name was Nicholas.

[00:00:34] Now when Nicholas was a little boy

[00:00:37] , a plague struck his home town

[00:00:39] And both his parents got sick and they died.

[00:00:42] He went to live with his uncle

[00:00:44] Who was a monk in a monastery,

[00:00:47] Who taught him all about God and Jesus.

[00:00:48] Now when Nicholas' parents died,

[00:00:50] They left him all of their money.

[00:00:52] But monks are supposed to be poor,

[00:00:55] So Nicholas resolved to give it all away,

[00:00:59] Especially to other children in trouble.

[00:01:00] There's a wonderful story about three girls who cold

[00:01:04] Not get married because they had no dowries.

[00:01:09] Now in those days a girl had to have

[00:01:11] A big sum of money,

[00:01:13] Or a dowry, if she was to marry.

[00:01:15] If she didn't, she'd be sold as a slave.

[00:01:18] Nicholas heard of this and he came up with a plan.

[00:01:22] Late at night he tossed a stocking full of gold coins

[00:01:27] Through the bedroom window of the oldest daughter.

[00:01:31] Soon she married a good husband.

[00:01:33] She said she had the dowry hidden away in her sock.

[00:01:35] Nicholas again tossed a sock full of money through

[00:01:40] The window of the second daughter.

[00:01:42] She, too, soon married.

[00:01:43] But when Nicholas crept up to the house with the third

[00:01:47] Full of money for the third daughter, he found

[00:01:49] All of the windows were shut.

[00:01:52] So he did what boys sometimes do.

[00:01:56] He climbed up on the roof and he dropped

[00:02:00] It down the chimney and it landed in the girl's shoes,

[00:02:06] Which were beside the hearth.

[00:02:09] When she, too,

[00:02:09] Married claiming that her dowry was in her shoes,

[00:02:10] People were amazed, and they said to one another,

[00:02:10] "It's some kind of miracle."

[00:02:14] St. Nicholas was an orphan boy

[00:02:17] Who became a priest and then a bishop,

[00:02:19] Who loved Jesus and God and gave away

[00:02:21] All of his wealth to the poor,

[00:02:22] And especially to children in trouble.
