The Geographic North Pole(Live)

[00:00:00] The Geographic North Pole (Live) - Laurie Anderson

[00:00:09] The summer of 1974 was brutally hot in New York

[00:00:15] And I kept thinking about how nice and icy it

[00:00:17] Must be at the North Pole And then I though

[00:00:22] “Wait a second why not go ”

[00:00:25] You know like in cartoons where

[00:00:26] They hang going to

[00:00:27] The North Pole on their door knobs

[00:00:29] And they just take off

[00:00:32] So I spent a couple of weeks preparing for the trip

[00:00:35] Getting a hatchet a huge backpack maps

[00:00:39] Knives sleeping bags

[00:00:41] Lures and a three month supply of Banic

[00:00:44] A versatile high-protein paste that can be

[00:00:47] Made into flat bread biscuits or cereal

[00:00:53] Now I had decided to hitch hike and one day I just

[00:00:58] Walked out onto Austin Street

[00:01:00] Weighing down seventy pounds of gear

[00:01:03] And stuck out my thumb

[00:01:08] Going North I asked the driver

[00:01:11] As I struggled into a station wagon

[00:01:15] After I got out of New York

[00:01:18] Most of the rides were trucks

[00:01:20] Until I reached the Hudson Bay and began

[00:01:22] To hitch in small mail planes

[00:01:26] The pilots were usually guys who'd

[00:01:29] Gone to Canada to

[00:01:30] Avoid the draft or else embittered Vietnam vets

[00:01:36] Who never wanted to go home again

[00:01:40] Either way they always wanted to show

[00:01:43] Off a few of their stunts

[00:01:46] We'd go swooping along the rivers doing

[00:01:49] Loop do loops and baby

[00:01:54] And they'd drop me off at an airstrip

[00:01:57] “There'll be another plane by here couple

[00:01:58] Of weeks; see ya; good luck ”

[00:02:06] I never did make it all the way to the geographic pole;

[00:02:10] It turned out to be a restricted area and no

[00:02:14] One was allowed to fly in or even over it

[00:02:20] I did get within a few miles of the

[00:02:22] Magnetic pole though

[00:02:24] So it wasn't really that disappointing

[00:02:28] I entertained myself in the evenings

[00:02:31] Cooking or smoking

[00:02:34] And watching the blazing light of

[00:02:37] The huge Canadian

[00:02:38] Sunsets as they turned the lake into fire

[00:02:46] Later I lay on by back looking up

[00:02:49] At the Northern lights

[00:02:51] And imagining there'd been

[00:02:52] A nuclear holocaust and

[00:02:54] That I was the only human being left in all of

[00:02:56] North America and what would I do then

[00:03:02] And then when these lights went out

[00:03:06] I stretched out on

[00:03:07] The ground watching the stars as

[00:03:12] They turned around

[00:03:14] And their enormous silent

[00:03:26] I finally decided to turn back because of my hatchet

[00:03:30] I'd been chopping some wood and the hatchet flew

[00:03:33] Out of my hand on the upswing

[00:03:36] And I did what you should never do

[00:03:38] When this happens:

[00:03:40] I looked up to see where it had gone

[00:03:45] And it came down

[00:03:47] Fffooo just missing my head and I thought

[00:03:52] My God I could be working around

[00:03:55] Here with a hatchet

[00:03:56] Emme in my skull and I'm ten miles

[00:04:00] From the airstrip

[00:04:02] And nobody in the whole world

[00:04:05] Knows where I am

[00:04:20] Daddy Daddy it was just like you said

[00:04:31] Now that the living outnumber the dead

[00:04:42] Where I come from it's a long thin thread

[00:04:51] Across an ocean Down a river of red

[00:05:01] Now that the living outnumber the dead

[00:05:12] Speak my language
