The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, Op.34

[00:00:05] benjamin britten has written a big piece of music,

[00:00:08] which is made up of smaller pieces

[00:00:10] that show you all the separate parts of the orchestra.

[00:00:13] these smaller pieces are called variations,

[00:00:16] which means different ways of playing the same tune.

[00:00:19] first of all, he lets us hear the tune or the theme,

[00:00:23] which is a beautiful melody

[00:00:24] by the much older british composer henry purcell.

[00:00:28] here is purcell's theme played by the whole orchestra together.

[00:00:31] music

[00:01:00] now, mr. britten lets you hear the four different families of the orchestra

[00:01:04] playing the same purcell theme in different ways.

[00:01:07] first, we hear the woodwind family.

[00:01:09] the flutes, the oboes, the clarinets and the bassoons.

[00:01:13] music

[00:01:35] here comes the brass family.

[00:01:37] the trumpets, the horns, the trombones and the tubas.

[00:01:43] music

[00:02:02] now, mr. britten arranges the purcell theme for the string family.

[00:02:06] the violins, the violas, the cellos and the double basses.

[00:02:10] and of course, the harp.

[00:02:13] music

[00:02:34] and finally the percussion family,

[00:02:36] all those drums and gongs and things you hit.

[00:02:38] music

[00:02:42] after this, you will hear the theme by purcell played once more

[00:02:45] in its original form by all four families together.

[00:02:48] that is, the whole orchestra.

[00:02:57] music
