[00:00:00] 1913 Massacre - Ramblin' Jack Elliott

[00:00:01] Written by:Woody Guthrie

[00:00:03] Take a trip with me in nineteen thirteen

[00:00:09] To Calumet Michigan in the copper country

[00:00:15] I'll take you to a place called italian hall

[00:00:21] And the miners are having their big christmas ball

[00:00:30] I'll take you in a door and up a high stairs

[00:00:34] Singing and dancing is heard everywhere

[00:00:38] I'll let you shake hands with the people you see

[00:00:44] And watch the kids dance around the big christmas tree

[00:00:53] There's talking and laughing and songs in the air

[00:00:57] And the spirit of christmas is there everywhere

[00:01:00] Before you know it you're friends with us all

[00:01:06] And you're dancing around and around in the hall

[00:01:14] You ask about work and you ask about the pay

[00:01:18] They'll tell you they make less than a dollar a day

[00:01:22] Working their copper claims risking their lives

[00:01:27] So it's fun to spend christmas with children and wives

[00:01:35] A little girl sits down by the christmas tree lights

[00:01:39] To play the piano so you gotta keep quiet

[00:01:42] To hear all this fun you would not realize

[00:01:47] That the copper boss thug men are milling outside

[00:01:56] The copper boss thugs stuck their heads in the door

[00:01:59] One of them yelled and he screamed there's a fire

[00:02:03] A lady she hollered there's no such a thing

[00:02:08] Keep on with your party there's no such a thing

[00:02:17] A few people rushed and there's only a few

[00:02:20] It's just the thugs and the scabs fooling you

[00:02:24] A man grabbed his daughter and he carried her down

[00:02:27] But the thugs held the door and he could not get out

[00:02:36] And then others followed a hundred or more

[00:02:40] But most everybody remained on the floor

[00:02:44] The gun thugs they laughed at their murderous joke

[00:02:48] And the children were smothered on the stairs by the door

[00:02:57] Such a terrible sight I never did see

[00:03:00] We carried our children back up to their tree

[00:03:04] The scabs outside still laughed at their spree

[00:03:13] And the children that died there was seventy three

[00:03:22] The piano played a slow funeral tune

[00:03:26] And the town was lit up by a cold christmas moon

[00:03:31] The parents they cried and the miners they moaned

[00:03:38] See what your greed for money has done
