The Ballad of Bill Thaxton

[00:00:00] The Ballad of Bill Thaxton - Marty Robbins

[00:00:01] Written by:B. Skyes

[00:00:02] Producer:Billy Sherrill

[00:00:07] Bill Thaxton was an ex ranger

[00:00:11] One of the bravest by far

[00:00:15] It's said that old Bill was the fastest man ever

[00:00:19] To pin on a ranger's star

[00:00:23] Stories about him were legends

[00:00:27] Bill was the best of the bold

[00:00:31] Bad men all feared him way back in his day

[00:00:35] But he was now growing old

[00:00:41] Into Bill's town rode an outlaw

[00:00:44] He wore his gun low and tied down

[00:00:48] He reined in his horse and announced to the crowd

[00:00:52] If you speak to me call me sundown

[00:00:56] His clothes were all dark and fancy

[00:01:00] And topped by a black leather vest

[00:01:04] Somebody asked how he came by his name

[00:01:08] And if he was one of the best

[00:01:14] The eyes of the tall stranger narrowed

[00:01:17] He grinned like the devil possessed

[00:01:22] I never fight till the sun's going down

[00:01:25] And my back is facing the west

[00:01:35] Said he wouldn't be with us tomorrow

[00:01:39] He only rode in for one thing

[00:01:43] He only stopped by to make Bill Thaxton die

[00:01:47] So he could add to his fame

[00:01:51] Go give Bill Thaxton a message

[00:01:54] And tell him a killer's in town

[00:01:59] Tell him we'll meet at the end of the street

[00:02:03] Just as the sun's going down

[00:02:09] Somebody said it had been years

[00:02:12] Since old Bill had toted a gun

[00:02:16] Sundown replied that it wasn't his hide

[00:02:20] Killing old Bill would be fun

[00:02:24] The old ranger sent back his answer

[00:02:28] Tell him that I'm on my way

[00:02:32] I've never ran and I'll meet this young man

[00:02:36] At any time of the day

[00:02:42] Bill got there just about sunset

[00:02:46] It still hung like fire in the sky

[00:02:50] In just a few moments out there in the street

[00:02:54] Old Bill or the outlaw would die

[00:03:04] Slowly Bill slid from the saddle

[00:03:07] And started to make his advance

[00:03:11] The sun hit the old ranger square in the eyes

[00:03:15] The shadows had started to dance

[00:03:19] Bill started talking to sundown

[00:03:23] Judging his distance that way

[00:03:27] Their stride was the same and at just thirty feet

[00:03:31] Both of the men made their play

[00:03:37] Bill's gun slipped leather like lightning

[00:03:40] His forty four spoke with a whine

[00:03:44] The sun didn't bother Bill Thaxton at all

[00:03:48] Because the old ranger was blind

[00:03:53] Six shots delivered their message

[00:03:56] The ranger had emptied his gun

[00:04:00] Bill gave a sigh when there was no reply

[00:04:04] He knew that once more he had won

[00:04:10] The old ranger lowered his six gun

[00:04:14] He just stood there starting ahead

[00:04:18] Watching you'd think that old Bill didn't know

[00:04:22] In front of him sundown lay dead

[00:04:32] Bill has been gone for a long time

[00:04:35] But old timers still can recall

[00:04:39] The day the old ranger stood up to the test

[00:04:43] And proved he was best of them all
