Oedipus Rex

[00:00:00] And now may I have

[00:00:01] The next slide please

[00:00:12] Carried away there

[00:00:13] It seems that most of the

[00:00:14] Songs that you hear these days

[00:00:15] On the radio played by the

[00:00:16] Disk jockeys apart from rock

[00:00:18] And roll and other children's

[00:00:20] Records tend to be motion

[00:00:28] Picture title songs Apparently

[00:00:31] Producers feel that we

[00:00:32] Will not attend their movies

[00:00:33] Unless we have the titles

[00:00:34] Well drilled into our heads

[00:00:35] In advance Of course we

[00:00:37] Don't go anyway but at least

[00:00:39] This way they make back on

[00:00:40] The song some of what they've

[00:00:41] Lost on the picture But

[00:00:44] With the rise of the motion

[00:00:45] Picture title song we have

[00:00:46] Such hits of the past few years

[00:00:48] As The Ten Commandments Mambo

[00:00:57] Brothers Karamazov Cha Cha

[00:01:02] Incredible Shrinking Man I Love You

[00:01:08] I'm sure you're all familiar with these

[00:01:09] But a few years ago

[00:01:11] A motion picture version appeared

[00:01:12] Of Sophocles' immortal tragedy

[00:01:14] Oedipus Rex This picture

[00:01:17] Played only in the so called

[00:01:18] Art theaters and it was not

[00:01:19] A financial success And I

[00:01:21] Maintain that the reason it was

[00:01:23] Not a financial success

[00:01:30] You're way ahead of me was

[00:01:34] That it did not have a title

[00:01:35] Tune which the people could

[00:01:38] Hum and which would make

[00:01:46] Them actually eager to attend

[00:01:48] This particular flick So

[00:01:52] I've attempted to supply this

[00:01:53] And here then is the prospective

[00:01:55] Title song from Oedipus Rex

[00:02:01] From the Bible to the popular song

[00:02:03] There's one theme that we find right along

[00:02:06] Of all ideals they hail as good

[00:02:09] The most sublime is motherhood

[00:02:13] There was a man though who it seems

[00:02:15] Once carried this ideal to extremes

[00:02:19] He loved his mother and she loved him

[00:02:22] And yet his story is rather grim

[00:02:32] There once lived a man named Oedipus Rex

[00:02:34] You may have heard about his odd complex

[00:02:37] His name appears in Freud's index

[00:02:38] 'Cause he loved his mother

[00:02:43] His rivals used to say quite a bit

[00:02:45] That as a monarch he was most unfit

[00:02:47] But still in all they had to admit

[00:02:49] That he loved his mother

[00:02:53] Yes he loved his mother like no other

[00:02:55] His daughter was his sister

[00:02:56] And his son was his brother

[00:02:58] One thing on which you can depend is

[00:03:01] He sure knew who a boy's best friend is

[00:03:03] When he found what he had done

[00:03:05] He tore his eyes out one by one

[00:03:07] A tragic end to a loyal son

[00:03:09] Who loved his mother

[00:03:13] So be sweet and kind to mother

[00:03:15] Now and then have a chat

[00:03:16] Buy her candy or some flowers

[00:03:17] Or a brand new hat

[00:03:19] But maybe you had better let it go at that

[00:03:22] Or you may find yourself with

[00:03:25] A quite complex complex

[00:03:26] And you may end up like Oedipus

[00:03:29] I'd rather marry a duck billed platypus

[00:03:31] Than end up like old Oedipus Rex
