Christmas as I Knew It

[00:00:02] Christmas As I Knew It - Johnny Cash

[00:00:09] One day near Christmas when I was just a child

[00:00:12] Mama called us together and mama tried to smile

[00:00:16] She said you know

[00:00:16] The cottoncrop hasn't been too good this year

[00:00:20] There's just no spending money

[00:00:23] And well at least we're all here

[00:00:25] I hope you won't expect a lot of Christmas presents

[00:00:28] Just be thankful that there is plenty to eat

[00:00:30] That's quite a blessing

[00:00:32] That'll make things a little more pleasant

[00:00:35] And us kids got to thinking how really blessed we were

[00:00:39] At least we were all healthy and best of all we had her

[00:00:45] Roy cut down a pigapple tree

[00:00:47] And we drug it home Jack and me

[00:00:50] Daddy killed a squirrel and Louise made the bread

[00:00:54] Reba decorated the tree with popcorn strings

[00:00:56] Before we went to bed

[00:00:59] Mama and daddy sacrificed 'cause this Christmas was lean

[00:01:03] But after all there was the babies

[00:01:05] Joanne and Tom babies need a few things

[00:01:11] I whittled a whistle for my brother Jack

[00:01:14] And though we fought now and then

[00:01:17] When I gave Jack that whistle

[00:01:18] He knew I thought the world of him

[00:01:22] Mama made the girl's dresses out of flower sacks

[00:01:25] And when she ironed them down

[00:01:26] You couldn't tell that they hadn't come from town

[00:01:29] A sharecropped family across the road

[00:01:32] Didn't have it as good as us

[00:01:34] They didn't even have a light

[00:01:37] And it was way past dusk

[00:01:41] Me and Jack took a jar of coaloil

[00:01:43] And some hickernuts we'd found

[00:01:45] We walked to the sharecropper's porch and set 'em down

[00:01:50] A poor old ragged lady eased open the door

[00:01:53] She picked up the coaloil and hickernuts and said

[00:01:55] I sure do thank ye and quickly closed the door

[00:02:00] We started back home me

[00:02:01] And Jack and about halfway we stopped looked back

[00:02:04] And in the sharecropper's window at last was a light

[00:02:08] So for one of the neighbors

[00:02:09] And for us it was a good Christmas night

[00:02:14] Christmas came and Christmas went Christmas

[00:02:18] That year was heaven sent

[00:02:20] Then daddy put on his gumboots

[00:02:22] Waited for the thaw back home in Dyess Arkansas
