Ludlow Massacre

[00:00:00] Ludlow Massacre - Woody Guthrie

[00:00:00] Written by:Guthrie

[00:00:03] It was early springtime when the strike was on

[00:00:08] They drove us miners out of doors

[00:00:12] Out from the houses that the company owned

[00:00:15] We moved into tents up at old ludlow

[00:00:22] I was worried bad about my children

[00:00:27] Soldiers guarding the railroad bridge

[00:00:31] Every once in a while a bullet would fly

[00:00:35] Kick up gravel under my feet

[00:00:40] We were so afraid you would kill our children

[00:00:43] We dug us a cave that was seven foot deep

[00:00:47] Carried our young ones and a pregnant women

[00:00:52] Down inside the cave to sleep

[00:00:58] That very night your soldiers waited 'til

[00:01:02] All us miners were asleep

[00:01:06] You snuck around our little tent town

[00:01:09] Soaked our tents with your kerosene

[00:01:14] You struck a match and in the blaze that started

[00:01:18] You pulled the triggers of your gatling guns

[00:01:22] I made a run for the children but the fire

[00:01:26] Wall stopped me

[00:01:28] Thirteen children died from your guns

[00:01:33] I carried my blanket to a wire fence corner

[00:01:37] Watched the fire till the blaze died down

[00:01:41] I helped some people drag their belongings

[00:01:45] While your bullets killed us all around

[00:01:50] I never will forget the look on the faces

[00:01:54] Of the men and women that awful day

[00:01:59] When we stood around to preach their funerals

[00:02:02] And lay the corpses of the dead away

[00:02:08] We told the Colorado governor to call the president

[00:02:14] Tell him call off his national guard

[00:02:19] But the national guard belonged to the governor

[00:02:23] So he didn't try so very hard

[00:02:28] Our women from Trinidad they hauled some potatoes

[00:02:33] Up to Walsenburg in a little cart

[00:02:36] They sold their potatoes and brought some guns back

[00:02:41] And they put a gun in every hand

[00:02:47] The state soldiers jumped us in a wire fence corners

[00:02:51] Did not know that we had these guns

[00:02:56] And the redneck miners mowed down these troopers

[00:03:00] You should have seen those poor boys run

[00:03:06] We took some cement and walled that cave up

[00:03:10] Where you killed these thirteen children inside

[00:03:15] I said god bless the mine workers' union

[00:03:21] And then I hung my head and cried
