Holst: Seven Part Songs - Assemble All Ye Maidens

[00:00:00] Assemble All Ye Maidens - Imogen Holst/English Chamber Orchestra (英国室内乐团)/The Purcell Singers/Susan Longfield

[00:00:01] Written by:Gustav Holst

[00:00:02] Assemble all ye maidens at the door

[00:00:07] And all ye loves assemble far and wide

[00:00:14] Proclaim the bridal that proclaimed before

[00:00:20] Has been deferred to this late eventide

[00:00:29] For on this night the bride

[00:00:32] The days of her betrothal over

[00:00:36] Leaves the parental hearth for evermore

[00:00:42] To night the bride goes forth to meet her lover

[00:00:54] Reach down the wedding vesture that has lain

[00:00:59] Yet all unvisited the silken gown

[00:01:03] Bring out the bracelets and the golden chain

[00:01:09] Her dearer friends provided sere and brown

[00:01:16] Bring out the festal crown

[00:01:19] And set it on her forehead lightly

[00:01:25] Though it be withered twine no wreath again

[00:01:32] This only is the crown she can wear rightly

[00:01:43] Cloak her in ermine for the night is cold

[00:01:51] And wrap her warmly for the night is long

[00:01:58] In pious hands the flaming torches hold

[00:02:04] While her attendants chosen from among

[00:02:10] Her faithful virgin throng

[00:02:15] May lay her in her cedar litter

[00:02:20] Decking her coverlet with sprigs of gold

[00:02:24] Roses and lilies white that best befit her

[00:02:36] Sound flute and tabor that the bridal be

[00:02:43] Not without music nor with these alone

[00:02:52] But let the viol lead the melody

[00:02:59] With lesser intervals and plaintive moan

[00:03:06] Of sinking semitone

[00:03:11] And all in choir the virgin voices

[00:03:21] Rest not from singing in skilled harmony

[00:03:29] The song that aye the bridegroom's ear rejoices

[00:03:44] Let the priests go before arrayed in white

[00:03:52] And let the dark stoled minstrels follow slow

[00:04:05] Next they that bear her honoured on this night

[00:04:16] And then the maidens in a double row

[00:04:24] Each singing soft and low

[00:04:30] And each on high a torch upstaying

[00:04:43] Unto her lover lead her forth with light

[00:04:52] With music and with singing and with praying

[00:05:07] 'Twas at this sheltering hour he nightly came

[00:05:11] And found her trusty window open wide

[00:05:15] And knew the signal of the timorous flame

[00:05:20] That long the restless curtain would not hide

[00:05:24] Her form that stood beside

[00:05:29] As scarce she dared to be delighted

[00:05:34] Listening to that sweet tale that is no shame

[00:05:39] To faithful lovers that their hearts have plighted

[00:05:50] But now for many days the dewy grass

[00:05:55] Has shown no markings of his feet at morn

[00:06:01] And watching she has seen no shadow pass

[00:06:06] The moonlit walk and heard no music borne

[00:06:12] Upon her ear forlorn

[00:06:18] In vain she has looked out to greet him

[00:06:22] He has not come he will not come alas

[00:06:29] So let us bear her out where she must meet him

[00:06:48] Now to the river bank the priests are come

[00:06:57] The bark is ready to receive its freight

[00:07:04] Let some prepare her place therein and some

[00:07:12] Embark the litter with its slender weight

[00:07:19] The rest stand by in state

[00:07:28] And sing her a safe passage over

[00:07:36] While she is oared across to her new home

[00:07:48] Into the arms of her expectant lover

[00:08:01] And thou o lover that art on the watch

[00:08:10] Where on the banks of the forgetful streams

[00:08:22] The pale indifferent ghosts wander and snatch

[00:08:31] The sweeter moments of their broken dreams

[00:08:40] Thou when the torchlight gleams

[00:08:46] When thou shalt see the slow procession

[00:08:54] And when thine ears the fitful music catch

[00:09:04] Rejoice for thou art near to thy possession
