Swiss Cottage Manoeuvres

[00:04:00] On a Christmas cake day one Friday in August

[00:04:00] In a book shop in Charing Cross Road

[00:04:00] I first set eyes on a girl and at once I didn't know

[00:04:00] She had eyes like a poet and hair like a rainbow

[00:04:00] Reflecting the lights that did glow

[00:04:00] And the sadness she kept in her eyes

[00:04:00] Struck my senses a blow

[00:04:00] And so as by chance at the touch of a glance

[00:04:00] We could find ourselves out in the road

[00:04:00] With no crush of time to defeat us and no place to go

[00:04:00] And I couldn't say how but the coffee bar crowd

[00:04:00] Had appeared through the silence that broke

[00:04:00] And she said 艁藰Oh my father's a judge in St Albans you know.艁藰

[00:04:00] Oh well, then perhaps I could help you

[00:04:00] You know that St. Albans is miles away

[00:04:00] And I've got a room in Swiss Cottage in which you could stay

[00:04:00] She laughed 艁藰Oh I couldn't do that, for I've got to be up in the

[00:04:00] Morning you see.艁藰

[00:04:00] So I rang up to find out the first morning train she could take.

[00:04:00] And so in the gloom of a candlelit room

[00:04:00] With spaghetti, two forks and plate

[00:04:00] She said 艁藰Oh I really would like to be free and escape.艁藰

[00:04:00] Oh well if it's like that, you don't have to go back

[00:04:00] And you're perfectly welcome to stay

[00:04:00] 艁藰But I've not finished school yet.艁藰 she said as she got into bed

[00:04:00] And so as she slept and the pure morning crept through the windows

[00:04:00] To take her away

[00:04:00] I thought you can't make people be what you want them to be

[00:04:00] I could see my self nailed to a dormitory tale of a holiday night's

[00:04:00] Escapade

[00:04:00] And just yesterday she had seemed like a woman to me

[00:04:00] And so like a child with the sleep in her eyes

[00:04:00] Where the sadness of age had once been

[00:04:00] She left on the train with a 艁藰See you again艁藰 and a smile

[00:04:00] And I couldn't say what I had won or I lost

[00:04:00] Or even just what I had seen

[00:04:00] But when I'm alone I just think of her once in awhile.
