My Egyptian Couch

[00:00:08] Now here's a book full of photographs

[00:00:12] That my ancestors made some generations ago

[00:00:18] They're wearing the lastest clothes in a nautical way

[00:00:24] The Suez Canal close behind is frozen in time

[00:00:30] The deck crews star out of a mime

[00:00:35] And they seem to be considering me

[00:00:38] Here on my Egyptian couch

[00:00:43] O the life on Edwardian steamships

[00:00:48] Is measured and slow, while down below

[00:00:52] There are fires that shudder and clang and thunder

[00:00:56] And sweat caked in smoke, and cauldrons to stoke

[00:01:01] To send the ship on her way

[00:01:05] Tasting the salt and the spray

[00:01:09] And a century later I scan the equator

[00:01:14] From my Egyptian couch

[00:01:36] And the news every day brings

[00:01:40] Contains the strangest of things

[00:01:45] But with confident smilesw my forebears decline

[00:01:49] To gaze into the wings

[00:01:54] So they look from the photographs

[00:01:58] And they're curious now, wondering how we turned out

[00:02:03] Let's say like the Chinese adage

[00:02:07] We're living our lives in interesting times
