1913 Massacre(Recorded Live)

[00:00:00] 1913 Massacre - Ramblin' Jack Elliott

[00:00:01] Take a trip with me in nineteen thirteen

[00:00:08] To Calumet Michigan in the copper country

[00:00:17] I'll take you to place called Italian Hall

[00:00:24] And the miners are having their big Christmas ball

[00:00:35] I'll take you in a door and up a high stairs

[00:00:40] Singing and dancing is heard everywhere

[00:00:45] I will let you shake hands with the people you see

[00:00:51] And watch the kids dance 'round

[00:00:56] The big Christmas tree

[00:01:01] There's talkin' and laughin' and songs in the air

[00:01:06] And the spirit of Christmas is there everywhere

[00:01:12] Before you know it you're friends with us all

[00:01:19] And you're dancing around and around in the hall

[00:01:30] You ask about work and you ask about pay

[00:01:34] They'll tell you

[00:01:35] They make less than a dollar a day

[00:01:39] Working the copper claims risking their lives

[00:01:46] So it's fun to spend Christmas

[00:01:51] With children and wives

[00:01:54] A little girl sits down

[00:01:55] By the Christmas tree lights

[00:01:58] To play the piano so you gotta keep quiet

[00:02:02] To hear all this fun you had not realize

[00:02:10] That the copper-boss thug-men

[00:02:14] They are milling outside

[00:02:16] The copper-boss thugs stuck their heads in the door

[00:02:20] One of them yelled and he screamed "There's a fire"

[00:02:25] A lady she hollered "There's no such a thing

[00:02:32] Keep on with your party there's no such a thing"

[00:02:40] A few people rushed and it's only a few

[00:02:44] It's just the thugs and the scabs fooling you

[00:02:49] A man grabbed his daughter and carried her down

[00:02:55] But the thugs held the door and he could not get out

[00:03:02] And then others followed a hundred or more

[00:03:06] Most everybody remained on the floor

[00:03:11] The gun-thugs they laughed at their murderous joke

[00:03:18] And the children were smothered

[00:03:23] On the stair by the door

[00:03:26] Such a terrible sight I never did see

[00:03:31] We carried our children back up to their tree

[00:03:35] The scabs outside still laughed at their spree

[00:03:46] And the children that died there were seventy-three

[00:03:54] Piano played a slow funeral tune

[00:03:59] And the town was lit up by a cold Christmas moon

[00:04:05] The parents they cried and the miners they moaned

[00:04:13] See what your greed for money has done
