Forefathers(Album Version)

[00:00:00] Forefathers - Dan Fogelberg

[00:00:13] They came from Scandinavia the land of midnight sun

[00:00:18] And crossed the North Atlantic when this century was young

[00:00:24] They'd heard that in America every man was free

[00:00:31] To live the way he chose to live and be who he could be

[00:00:42] Some of them were farmers there and tilled the frozen soil

[00:00:48] But all they got was poverty for all their earnest toil

[00:00:54] They say one was a sailor who sailed the wide world round

[00:01:01] Made home port got drunk one night walked off the pier and drowned

[00:01:18] My mother was of Scottish blood it's there that she was born

[00:01:24] They brought her to America in 1924

[00:01:30] They left behind the highlands and the heather-covered hills

[00:01:36] And came to find America with broad expectant dreams and iron wills

[00:01:49] My granddad worked the steel mills of central Illinois

[00:01:55] His daughter was his jewel his son was just his boy

[00:02:01] For thirty years he worked the mills and stoked the coke-fed fires

[00:02:08] And looked toward the day when he'd at last turn 65 and could retire

[00:02:20] And the sons become the fathers and their daughters will be wives

[00:02:26] As the torch is passed from hand to hand

[00:02:31] And we struggle through our lives

[00:02:33] Though the generations wander the lineage survives

[00:02:40] And all of us from dust to dust

[00:02:44] We all become forefathers by and by

[00:03:06] The woman and the man were wed just after the war

[00:03:11] And they settled in this river town and three fine sons she bore

[00:03:18] One became a lawyer and one fine pictures drew

[00:03:24] And one became this lonely soul

[00:03:26] Who sits here now and sings this song to you

[00:03:36] And the sons become the fathers and their daughters will be wives

[00:03:42] As the torch is passed from hand to hand

[00:03:45] And we struggle through our lives

[00:03:48] Though the generations wander the lineage survives

[00:03:57] And all of us from dust to dust

[00:03:59] We all become forefathers by and by
