[00:00:00] 1913 Massacre - Ramblin' Jack Elliot

[00:00:01] Written by:Guthrie

[00:00:05] Take a trip with me in nineteen thirteen

[00:00:10] To calumet Michigan in the copper country

[00:00:15] I'll take you to place called Italian hall

[00:00:22] And the miners are having their big Christmas ball

[00:00:29] I'll take you in a door and up a high stairs

[00:00:34] Singing and dancing is heard everywhere

[00:00:39] I will let you shake hands with the people you see

[00:00:44] And watch the kids dance 'round the big Christmas tree

[00:00:52] There's talkin' and laughin' and songs in the air

[00:00:56] And the spirit of Christmas is there everywhere

[00:01:00] Before you know it you're friends with us all

[00:01:05] And you're dancing around and around in the hall

[00:01:11] You ask about work and you ask about pay

[00:01:15] They'll tell you they make less than a dollar a day

[00:01:19] Working the copper claims risking their lives

[00:01:24] So it's fun to spend Christmas with children and wives

[00:01:31] Hey a little girl sits down by the Christmas tree lights

[00:01:35] To play the piano so you gotta keep quiet

[00:01:38] To hear all this fun you had not realize

[00:01:43] That the copper boss thug men they are milling outside

[00:01:49] The copper boss thugs stuck their heads in the door

[00:01:53] One of them yelled and he screamed there's a fire

[00:01:57] A lady she hollered there's no such a thing

[00:02:01] Keep on with your party there's no such a thing

[00:02:08] A few people rushed and it's only a few

[00:02:11] It's just the thugs and the scabs fooling you

[00:02:15] A man grabbed his daughter and carried her down

[00:02:19] But the thugs held the door and he could not get out

[00:02:25] And then others followed a hundred or more

[00:02:29] Most everybody remained on the floor

[00:02:34] The gun thugs they laughed at their murderous joke

[00:02:39] And the children were smothered on the stair by the door

[00:02:45] Such a terrible sight I never did see

[00:02:50] We carried our children back up to their tree

[00:02:55] The scabs outside still laughed at their spree

[00:03:01] And the children that died there were seventy three

[00:03:12] Piano played a slow funeral tune

[00:03:16] And the town was lit up by a cold Christmas moon

[00:03:21] The parents they cried and the miners they moaned

[00:03:28] See what your greed for money has done
