Band Played Waltzing Matilda

[00:00:00] Band Played Waltzing Matilda - John Schumann and The Vagabond Crew

[00:00:00] Written by:Eric Bogle

[00:00:09] When I was a young man I carried my pack

[00:00:14] And I lived the free life of a rover

[00:00:18] From the Murrays green basin to the dusty outback

[00:00:23] I waltzed my Matilda all over

[00:00:28] Then in nineteen fifteen my country said Son

[00:00:32] It's time to stop rambling 'cause there's work to be done

[00:00:37] So they gave me a tin hat and they gave me a gun

[00:00:42] And they sent me away to the war

[00:00:47] And the band played Waltzing Matilda

[00:00:51] As we sailed away from the quay

[00:00:56] And amidst all the tears and the shouts and the cheers

[00:01:00] We sailed off to Gallipoli

[00:01:13] How well I remember that terrible day

[00:01:18] How the blood stained the sand and the water

[00:01:22] And how in that hell that they called Suvla Bay

[00:01:27] We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter

[00:01:32] Johnny Turk he was ready he primed himself well

[00:01:36] He chased us with bullets he rained us with shells

[00:01:41] And in five minutes flat he'd blown us all to hell

[00:01:46] Nearly blew us right back to Australia

[00:01:50] But the band played Waltzing Matilda

[00:01:55] As we stopped to bury our slain

[00:01:59] We buried ours and the Turks buried theirs

[00:02:05] Then we started all over again

[00:02:17] Now those that were left well we tried to survive

[00:02:21] In a mad world of blood death and fire

[00:02:26] And for ten weary weeks I kept myself alive

[00:02:31] But around me the corpses piled higher

[00:02:36] Then a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over tit

[00:02:40] And when I woke up in my hospital bed

[00:02:45] And saw what it had done I wished I was dead

[00:02:50] Never knew there were worse things than dying

[00:02:54] For no more I'll go waltzing Matilda

[00:02:59] All around the green bush far and near

[00:03:04] For to hump tent and pegs a man needs two legs

[00:03:08] No more waltzing Matilda for me

[00:03:30] And now every April I sit on my porch

[00:03:35] And I watch the parade pass before me

[00:03:39] And I watch my old comrades how proudly they march

[00:03:44] Reliving old dreams of past glory

[00:03:49] And the old men march slowly all bent stiff and sore

[00:03:54] The forgotten heroes from a forgotten war

[00:03:58] And the young people ask What are they marching for

[00:04:03] And I ask myself the same question

[00:04:07] And the band plays Waltzing Matilda

[00:04:12] And the old men answer to the call

[00:04:16] But year after year their numbers get fewer

[00:04:23] Some day no one will march there at all
