Constantine’s Dream

[00:00:01] Constantine's Dream - Patti Smith

[00:00:19] In Arezzo I dreamed a dream

[00:00:28] Of Saint Francis who kneeled and prayed

[00:00:37] For the birds and the beasts and all humankind

[00:00:51] All through the night I felt drawn in by him

[00:01:01] And I heard him call

[00:01:05] Like a distant hymn

[00:01:12] I retreated from the silence of my room

[00:01:16] Stepping down the ancient stones washed with dawn

[00:01:21] And entered the basilica that bore his name

[00:01:26] Seeing his effigy I bowed my head

[00:01:32] And my racing heart I gave to him I kneeled and prayed

[00:01:46] And the sleep that I could not find in the night

[00:01:51] I found through him

[00:01:58] I saw before me the world of his world

[00:02:03] The bright fields the birds in abundance

[00:02:08] All of nature of which he sang

[00:02:12] Singing of him

[00:02:16] All the beauty that surrounded him as he walked

[00:02:20] His nature that was nature itself

[00:02:24] And I heard him - I heard him speak

[00:02:29] And the birds sang sweetly

[00:02:32] And the wolves licked his feet

[00:02:36] But I could not give myself to him

[00:02:40] I felt another call from the basilica itself

[00:02:45] The call of art - the call of man

[00:02:49] And the beauty of the material drew me away

[00:02:53] And I awoke and beheld upon the wall

[00:02:57] The dream of Constantine

[00:03:02] The handiwork of Piero della Francesca

[00:03:07] Who had stood where I stood

[00:03:11] With his brush stroked The Legend of the True Cross

[00:03:20] He envisioned Constantine advancing to greet the enemy

[00:03:26] But as he was passing the river

[00:03:29] An unaccustomed fear gripped his bowels

[00:03:32] An anticipation so overwhelming that it manifested in waves

[00:03:43] All through the night a dream drew toward him

[00:03:53] As an advancing Crusade

[00:03:54] He slept in his tent on the battlefield

[00:03:59] While his men stood guard

[00:04:02] And an angel awoke him

[00:04:07] Constantine within his dream awoke

[00:04:11] And his men saw a light pass over the face of the King

[00:04:16] The troubled King

[00:04:19] And the angel came and showed to him

[00:04:22] The sign of the true cross in heaven

[00:04:27] And upon it was written

[00:04:30] In this sign shall thou conquer

[00:04:32] In the distance the tents of his army were lit by moonlight

[00:04:39] But another kind of radiance lit the face of Constantine

[00:04:44] And in the morning light

[00:04:47] The artist seeing his work was done

[00:04:52] Saw that it was good

[00:04:56] In this sign shall thou conquer

[00:05:12] He let his brush drop and passed into a sleep of his own

[00:05:17] And he dreamed of Constantine carrying into battle in his right hand

[00:05:22] An immaculate undefiled single white Cross

[00:05:29] Piero della Francesca as his brush stroked the wall

[00:05:34] Was filled with a torpor

[00:05:39] And fell into a dream of his own

[00:05:46] From the geometry of his heart he mapped it out

[00:05:51] He saw the King rise fitted with armor

[00:05:56] Set upon a white horse

[00:05:56] An immaculate cross in his right hand

[00:06:01] He advanced toward the enemy

[00:06:04] And the symmetry the perfection of his mathematics

[00:06:08] Caused the scattering of the enemy

[00:06:11] Agitated broken they fled

[00:06:15] And Piero della Francesca waking cried out

[00:06:22] All is art - all is future

[00:06:27] Oh Lord let me die on the back of adventure

[00:06:32] With a brush and an eye full of light

[00:06:38] But as he advanced in age

[00:06:41] The light was shorn from his eyes

[00:06:44] And blinded he laid upon his bed

[00:06:47] On an October morning 1492 and whispered

[00:06:55] Oh Lord let me die on the back of adventure

[00:07:04] Oh Lord let me die on the back of adventure

[00:07:13] And a world away - a world away

[00:07:21] On three great ships

[00:07:24] Adventure itself as if to answer

[00:07:27] Pulling into the New World

[00:07:29] And as far as his eyes could see

[00:07:32] No longer blind

[00:07:34] All of nature unspoiled - beautiful - beautiful

[00:07:42] In such a manner that would have lifted the heart of St Francis

[00:07:50] Into the realm of universal love

[00:07:55] Columbus stepped foot on the New World

[00:08:01] And witnessed beauty unspoiled

[00:08:06] All the delights given by God

[00:08:10] As if an Eden itself as if Eden had opened her heart to him

[00:08:17] And opened her dress

[00:08:20] And all of her fruit gave to him

[00:08:27] And Columbus so overwhelmed

[00:08:31] Fell into a sleep of his own

[00:08:36] All the world in his sleep

[00:08:40] All of the beauty all of the beauty entwined with the future

[00:08:47] The twenty-first century

[00:08:49] Advancing like the angel

[00:08:52] Advancing like the angel

[00:08:54] That had come

[00:08:55] To Constantine

[00:08:56] Constantine in his dream

[00:08:59] Oh this is your cross to bear

[00:09:02] Oh Lord Oh Lord let me deliver

[00:09:08] Hallowed adventure to all mankind

[00:09:11] In the future

[00:09:13] Oh art cried the painter

[00:09:15] Oh art - Oh art - cried the angel

[00:09:18] Art the great material gift of man

[00:09:22] Art that hath denied

[00:09:24] The humble pleas of St Francis

[00:09:26] Oh thou Artist

[00:09:28] All shall crumble into dust

[00:09:31] Oh thou navigator

[00:09:33] The terrible end of man

[00:09:35] This is your gift to mankind

[00:09:37] This is your cross to bear

[00:09:40] And Columbus saw all of nature aflame

[00:09:44] The apocalyptic night

[00:09:46] And the dream of the troubled King

[00:09:51] Dissolved into light
