The Legend Of Wooley Swamp(Album Version)

[00:00:00] The Legend Of Wooley Swamp -The Charlie Daniels Band

[00:00:19] Well, if you ever go back into Wooley Swamp,

[00:00:22] Well, you better not go at night.

[00:00:24] There's things out there in the middle of them woods

[00:00:26] That make a strong man die from fright.

[00:00:29] Things that crawl and things that fly

[00:00:31] And things that creep around on the ground.

[00:00:33] And they say the ghost of Lucius Clay gets up and he walks around.

[00:00:37] [Chorus

[00:00:37] But I couldn't believe it.

[00:00:40] I just had to find out for myself.

[00:00:42] And I couldn't conceive it

[00:00:43] 'Cause I never would have listened to nobody else.

[00:00:47] And I couldn't believe it.

[00:00:50] I just had to find out for myself

[00:00:53] There's somethings in this world you just

[00:00:55] Can't explain.

[00:00:56] Spoken:

[00:01:00] The old man lived in the Wooley Swamp way back in Booger Woods.

[00:01:05] He never did do a lot of harm in the world,

[00:01:07] But he never did do no good

[00:01:09] People didn't think too much of him

[00:01:11] They all thought he acted funny

[00:01:13] The old man didn't care about people anyway

[00:01:16] All he cared about was his money.

[00:01:18] He'd stuff it all down in mason jars

[00:01:20] And he'd bury it all around

[00:01:23] And on certain nights

[00:01:24] If the moon was right

[00:01:25] H e'd dig it up out of the ground.

[00:01:28] He'd pour it all out on the floor of his shack

[00:01:30] And run his fingers through it.

[00:01:32] Yeah, Lucius Clay was a greedy old man

[00:01:34] And that's all that there was to it.

[00:02:04] Cable boys was white trash

[00:02:06] They lived over on Carver's Creek.

[00:02:08] They were mean as a snake

[00:02:10] And sneaky as a cat

[00:02:11] And belligerent when they'd speak.

[00:02:13] One night the oldest brother said,

[00:02:15] "Y'all meet me at the Wooley Swamp later

[00:02:18] We'll take old Lucius's money

[00:02:19] And we'll feed him to the alligators."

[00:02:22] They found the old man out in the back

[00:02:24] With a shovel in his hand,

[00:02:26] Thirteen rusty mason jars

[00:02:29] Was just dug up out of the sand.

[00:02:31] And they all went crazy

[00:02:33] And they beat the old man,

[00:02:34] And they picked him up off of the ground.

[00:02:36] Threw him in the swamp

[00:02:38] And stood there and laughed

[00:02:39] As the black water sucked him down.

[00:02:40] Then they turned around

[00:02:42] And went back to the shack

[00:02:43] And picked up the money and ran.

[00:02:45] They hadn't gone nowhere

[00:02:46] When they realized

[00:02:47] They were running in quicksand.

[00:02:49] And they struggled and they screamed

[00:02:51] But they couldn't get away

[00:02:53] And just before they went under

[00:02:55] They could hear that old man laughing

[00:02:57] In a voice as loud as thunder.

[00:03:00] And that's been fifty years ago

[00:03:03] And you can go by there yet.

[00:03:05] There's a spot in the yard

[00:03:06] In the back of that shack

[00:03:09] Where the ground is always wet.

[00:03:13] And on summer nights

[00:03:15] If the moon is right

[00:03:17] Down by the that dark footpath,

[00:03:18] You can hear three young men screaming.

[00:03:20] You can hear one old man laugh.
