What Is Father

[00:00:00] What Is Father - Hank Snow

[00:00:01] Written by:Hank Snow

[00:00:09] Almost any evening about six

[00:00:10] An adult male can be seen taking off his shoes

[00:00:14] Putting on house slippers picking up the evening paper

[00:00:17] And reclining deep in the softest chair

[00:00:19] In the living room of any well regulated home

[00:00:23] No sooner is he seated comfortably

[00:00:25] When small creatures call children

[00:00:28] Climb up on top of him muss his hair tumble in his lap

[00:00:32] Kiss him and hug him

[00:00:33] And run for mother when he lets out a great big yell

[00:00:37] He is not a monster although he is sometimes accused of it

[00:00:40] When he loses his temper

[00:00:42] He is not exactly a stranger in the house

[00:00:45] Although he mostly sleeps and eats there

[00:00:48] He is not a boarder although he thinks sometimes

[00:00:50] That it would be cheaper for him

[00:00:52] No he is none of these things he is a father

[00:00:57] Father's come in assorted shapes sizes and ages

[00:01:00] But all have one common creed

[00:01:03] To always provide to the best of his ability

[00:01:06] All the comforts of good living to his wife and family

[00:01:10] To always have a little extra change in his pockets for the children

[00:01:14] Bills of large denomonations for his wife and family expenses

[00:01:18] And a secret hidden compartment in his wallet

[00:01:20] For bills of a smaller denomonations

[00:01:22] For his own pleasures which are few

[00:01:26] Fathers are a necessary item in each home

[00:01:29] They are handy for putting up storm windows painting screens

[00:01:33] Mowing the lawn nailing a shelf lifting heavy objects

[00:01:38] Moving the furniture wiping the dishes cleaning the basement

[00:01:42] And they are perfect as a soft touch

[00:01:44] When the kids need spending money

[00:01:47] Children adore them house to house salesmen hate them

[00:01:50] Wives tolerate them and heaven

[00:01:52] And the insurance companies protect them

[00:01:55] At home a father is usually quiet unassuming and casual

[00:01:59] He answers to names like daddy dad pop popsey the old man that stinker

[00:02:06] And that loveable character or the mister of the house

[00:02:11] He answers most questions with inaudible mumbles daydreaming glances

[00:02:15] Or house shaking bellows depending on the situation

[00:02:19] Get him into his best blue suit

[00:02:21] And well starched collar and he complains bitterly

[00:02:24] But once at the party he becomes the speaker of the evening

[00:02:28] He tells jokes he would never tolerate at home

[00:02:31] And he dances with all the girls

[00:02:33] Wears the lampshade as a hula costume

[00:02:35] And protests loudly when the last hour's finished

[00:02:38] And mother bustles him homeward

[00:02:41] Fathers are a paradox they will fight man or beast to protect the family

[00:02:45] Yet an upset stomach or a minor pain is reason

[00:02:48] Enough to cause loud moaning and groaning

[00:02:50] And checking to see if the last will and testement is in order

[00:02:55] He walks ten miles on the golfcourse

[00:02:57] But takes the car to mail a letter at the corner

[00:03:00] He eats like a horse but uses sacchrine in his coffee

[00:03:03] Because he is on a diet

[00:03:05] He hollers bloody murder when the bills come due

[00:03:08] But always manages to come up with a nice gift at the appropriate time

[00:03:12] He is a devil an angel a saint a gallant gentleman an uncouth creature

[00:03:19] A wise business man and a sucker for a sob story

[00:03:24] Fathers are people who snore the loudest use the bathroom the longest

[00:03:29] Can't find shirts underwear and socks the ofteness

[00:03:33] And holler the loudest when mother

[00:03:34] And the kids are not dressed and ready to go when he is

[00:03:39] Fathers should never be bothered

[00:03:40] When they are reading the paper when monthly bills arrive

[00:03:43] The 15 th of march and on sunday mornings

[00:03:47] Fathers like books golf a good smoke

[00:03:50] Open necked shirts house slippers tweed suits

[00:03:54] A soft bed cards hammocks after shave lotions sports

[00:03:59] Sleeping late lodge nights and one woman

[00:04:03] They are not so much for company neck ties

[00:04:06] Shaving perfumes after dinner speakers

[00:04:09] Crowds lawnmowers relatives mother's new hat diets cuff links collar buttons

[00:04:17] Empty refrigerators tuxedos garters and dentisits

[00:04:23] They remember business appointments luncheons sporting data and taxes

[00:04:28] But forget birthdays anniversaries grocery lists and the ring in the bathtub

[00:04:34] Yes father's are strange customers

[00:04:37] They holler and beller and complain

[00:04:39] They never seem to do things the right way

[00:04:43] They bundle the kids off to sunday school then sleep through church

[00:04:47] They are outwardly tough and inwardly sentimental

[00:04:51] And they are the little boys of yesterday grown up

[00:04:54] And yet when this big rough tough rugged self sufficient man talks with his Lord

[00:05:01] When and where no other human can see him in his humility

[00:05:05] He will invariable say something like this

[00:05:10] Dear beloved father thanks for seeing my family safely

[00:05:14] Through another day in these uncertain times

[00:05:18] Thanks for the health the food and the goodness

[00:05:21] You have bestowed upon my loved ones

[00:05:24] Thanks for helpin' to make of me the man my kids think I am

[00:05:29] Thanks for forgiving my transgressions and shortcomings

[00:05:32] And for helping me to walk closer in thy way

[00:05:36] Thanks again for my wonderful home and family

[00:05:39] And above all thanks for the woman you have blessed me with

[00:05:42] The mother of my children my wonderful understanding wife

[00:05:47] Please watch over them while I am away

[00:05:49] And bring peace to all families like ours everywhere

[00:05:54] I ask this in your name

[00:05:57] Thanks father

[00:05:58] Amen
