Paultalk (Live Version)

[00:12:38] I'd like to call somebody to the stage that you know as a folk singer

[00:12:38] But that you haven't met in his other role

[00:12:38] Paul is a comedian with a unique point of view and commentary

[00:12:38] And in this capacity, ladies and gentlemen

[00:12:38] Please welcome with me to the stage, my good friend

[00:12:38] My compatriot, Paul Stookey

[00:12:38] That was the sound of a golf ball

[00:12:38] Or if you're a ping-pong enthusiast, that was a sound of a ping-pong ball

[00:12:38] Except generally you'll hear

[00:12:38] That's the sound of a match between a golfer and a ping-pong enthusiast

[00:12:38] I played golf today, 18 holes I played golf, wooo

[00:12:38] I did pretty good too, I think you would have been very proud of me

[00:12:38] Four. Five. Six Seven

[00:12:38] I don't like sports very much

[00:12:38] There's a vast number of sports that I'm not invlved in.

[00:12:38] There's water skiing

[00:12:38] In order to water ski, really you should swim, right?

[00:12:38] You're not gonna stay up there all the time, now

[00:12:38] And I don't like to swim, really

[00:12:38] You know what swimming is to me?

[00:12:38] Staying alive when I'm in the water.

[00:12:38] Barely

[00:12:38] I'll do anything to stay afloat

[00:12:38] Even swallow Co2 cartriges

[00:12:38] But I didn't come out here to talk about sports

[00:12:38] I really, I came out here, Peter talks about status

[00:12:38] And I cannot think of one material object that has more status in this country

[00:12:38] Than the automobile

[00:12:38] And it starts at a very early age now, right?

[00:12:38] I mean, now at 14, kids want the car, right?

[00:12:38] They get cheaters permits so they can drive

[00:12:38] You get a learners permit at 15, a cheaters permit at 14

[00:12:38] And it's, I guess it's really necessary because

[00:12:38] You lose a lot of face calling up a girl and asking her

[00:12:38] If you can peddle right over and pick her up, right?

[00:12:38] They don't really go for that any more

[00:12:38] And if you look back on all the times you had the automobile

[00:12:38] Aside from a few interesting saturday evenings

[00:12:38] You got to admit that one of the nicest times of all

[00:12:38] Was a sunday afternoon, if you could get the car

[00:12:38] You come down the stairs, ker-clunk ker-clunk ker-clunk ker-clunk

[00:12:38] Mom, dad, gonna take the car, ha haaa

[00:12:38] Beautiful day for a drive, I think I'll go out

[00:12:38] Ha haaa haaa ha huuu

[00:12:38] And then, and then they level you with that giant killer, right?

[00:12:38] HAVE YOU DONE YOUR HOMEWORK?

[00:12:38] If you were fast, you'd say, mom, dad, have I done my homework?

[00:12:38] Run out the door

[00:12:38] You pick up 3 other great pretenders, 3 oclock in the afternoon

[00:12:38] The time is now 10 oclock in the evening

[00:12:38] The same 4 guys are in the same car

[00:12:38] Well, whata you wanna do?

[00:12:38] I don't know, whada you wanna do?

[00:12:38] Hey, we've been driving for 7 hours

[00:12:38] Hey, I got an idea, he he

[00:12:38] Yeah, what's that?

[00:12:38] Lets go to a drive-in resturant and look at the girls, hehehe

[00:12:38] Oh, ok

[00:12:38] Well, here they are, but they're all from our high school

[00:12:38] Wait a minute, there's a car load over there

[00:12:38] There's a place right next to them, lets go get it

[00:12:38] Don't look at 'em

[00:12:38] Here's the conversation in the girls car you never heard

[00:12:38] Here they come

[00:12:38] There they are

[00:12:38] Don't look at 'em

[00:12:38] Remember the time when drive-ins first opened

[00:12:38] And the girls used to come out to take your order?

[00:12:38] Now you're lucky you know, if you get a girl in slacks who delivers it

[00:12:38] I understand they're even putting in conveyor belts in some drive-in resturants

[00:12:38] There was a time when the little girls came running out in short little skirts

[00:12:38] Remember them?

[00:12:38] You pull in

[00:12:38] And the little girl would come running up

[00:12:38] May I take your order sir?

[00:12:38] Yes, but I don't believe it's on the menu, ha ha

[00:12:38] They don't, they don't let you flirt any more now

[00:12:38] They give you a little green box with a white button on it

[00:12:38] A little speaker grill, right

[00:12:38] What?

[00:12:38] Oh, ok, um, We'd like one cheeseburger deluxe special extra

[00:12:38] The one you have out here with the little white cup

[00:12:38] With that whatever that's in there, we'll take it, whatever it is

[00:12:38] And uh, we'd like two hamburgers medium rare with everything on 'em

[00:12:38] And one hamburger, no, one hamburger, meat, no hamburgers

[00:12:38] One frank, and three chiliburgers, ok?

[00:12:38] Alright, and we'd like two chocolate shakes, regular thick, for spoons you know THICK

[00:12:38] And we'd like two strawberry shakes thin

[00:12:38] Water them down, or milk them down a little, ok

[00:12:38] 'Cause we got somebody here with chapped lips and they'd like it thin

[00:12:38] Can, you understand what I mean?

[00:12:38] Are you there?

[00:12:38] Well, could you tell us what we have please?

[00:12:38] And four six-packs

[00:12:38] We'll take it

[00:12:38] And after you get your food order in, you got at least 40 minutes to wait

[00:12:38] Even if it's just a cup of coffee you got 40 minutes to wait

[00:12:38] And you cannot get out of your car, right

[00:12:38] Remember there was a time when drive-ins first opened

[00:12:38] You used to pull in and get out, exchange hellos, greetings

[00:12:38] Evidentally some people were getting out and exchanging

[00:12:38] Something a little heavier than hellos and greetings

[00:12:38] They have policemen there to keep you in your car

[00:12:38] You can be 47 years old and drop your credit cards on the ground

[00:12:38] Officer, that's my wallet

[00:12:38] I don't care who you are kid back in the car

[00:12:38] If you do get out, you gotta be very careful

[00:12:38] Because the new resturants have radar now

[00:12:38] So you have to crawl on your belly between the cars

[00:12:38] You get over to the side of the car

[00:12:38] Psssst

[00:12:38] Psssst down here!

[00:12:38] I can't come up, they'll spot me

[00:12:38] Put down your window

[00:12:38] Power windows, huh?

[00:12:38] Whoo, this is a pretty fancy car

[00:12:38] Hey, you're a pretty fancy broad

[00:12:38] If you did manage to get out of the drive-in resturant without being maimed

[00:12:38] There was a sporting event taking place at the traffic light

[00:12:38] Remember, with all of two characters

[00:12:38] Mr. Businessman who drove a 4-door family sedan with black-wall tires

[00:12:38] Automatic transmission

[00:12:38] Seated next to him in a 1941 gray primer coated Ford

[00:12:38] With it's rear end 2 inches off the ground

[00:12:38] Tomato cans for mufflers

[00:12:38] With his back to the drivers window, his left arm draped over the steering wheel

[00:12:38] His right hand gripped onto the gearshift lever

[00:12:38] A sneer on lips sat THE KID

[00:12:38] Well, Mr. Businessman has just had his bands tightened, and

[00:12:38] Those of you who are not quite sure what I mean

[00:12:38] By having your bands tightened

[00:12:38] The bands are the rings in an automatic transmission

[00:12:38] Which actually affect the gear change

[00:12:38] Uh huh, I'll give you an example

[00:12:38] This is an automobile with tight bands

[00:12:38] This is an automobile with loose bands

[00:12:38] Well, Mr. Businessman has just had his bands tightened

[00:12:38] And he thinks that he will show THE KID a thing or two

[00:12:38] Meanwhile, THE KID

[00:12:38] Has inched these 2 fingers up over his left arm

[00:12:38] This is the universal signlanguage among teenagers for dragging

[00:12:38] You probably recall Winston Churchill during the war years

[00:12:38] Which everyone assumed meant V for victory

[00:12:38] Actually if you'll also recall Winston Churchill smokes a cigar, right?

[00:12:38] He used to hold it in here, right?

[00:12:38] And occationally he would turn to his friends on the stage and say

[00:12:38] Want a drag?

[00:12:38] See, and the kids picked it up

[00:12:38] The light changes

[00:12:38] The light changes to amber and Mr. Businessman decides to get very daring

[00:12:38] He pulls the automatic transmission down into low

[00:12:38] He puts one foot on the brake

[00:12:38] Still holding the foot on the brake, in order to get that extra fast start

[00:12:38] He pulls the automatic transmission down into low

[00:12:38] And pushes down on the accelerator five inches

[00:12:38] The car is internally hemorraging

[00:12:38] He knows, he knows, he knows he's gonna have to have another band job

[00:12:38] He's not gonna let THE KID show him up

[00:12:38] The light changes to green, Mr. Businessman is off

[00:12:38] Looks at the speedometer, 80, 90, 95, 96, 97, 98 miles an hour

[00:12:38] Looks out the window and The Kids not even there

[00:12:38] You know what's there?

[00:12:38] He looks in the rear view mirror and The Kids still back at the corner

[00:12:38] He never races anybody

[00:12:38] He just sits there and scares the hell out of them
