The Great Dust Storm

[00:00:00] The Great Dust Storm - Woody Guthrie

[00:00:03] On the 14th day of April of 1935

[00:00:10] There struck the worst of dust storms that ever filled the sky

[00:00:17] You could see that dust storm comin' the cloud looked deathlike black

[00:00:24] And through our mighty nation it left a dreadful track

[00:00:31] From Oklahoma City to the Arizona line

[00:00:38] Dakota and Nebraska to the lazy Rio Grande

[00:00:45] It fell across our city like a curtain of black rolled down

[00:00:51] We thought it was our judgement we thought it was our doom

[00:00:58] The radio reported we listened with alarm

[00:01:05] The wild and windy actions of this great mysterious storm

[00:01:12] From Albuquerque and Clovis and all New Mexico

[00:01:19] They said it was the blackest that ever they had saw

[00:01:26] From old Dodge City Kansas the dust had rung their knell

[00:01:33] And a few more comrades sleeping on top of old Boot Hill

[00:01:40] From Denver Colorado they said it blew so strong

[00:01:47] They thought that they could hold out but

[00:01:50] They didn't know how long

[00:01:54] Our relatives were huddled into their oil boom shacks

[00:02:00] And the children they was cryin' as it whistled through the cracks

[00:02:07] And the family it was crowded into their little room

[00:02:14] They thought the world had ended and

[00:02:18] They thought it was their doom

[00:02:21] The storm took place at sundown it lasted through the night

[00:02:28] When we looked out next morning we saw a terrible sight

[00:02:35] We saw outside our window where wheat fields they had grown

[00:02:43] Was now a rippling ocean of dust the wind had blown

[00:02:49] It covered up our fences it covered up our barns

[00:02:56] It covered up our tractors in this wild and dusty storm

[00:03:03] We loaded our jalopies and piled our families in

[00:03:10] We rattled down that highway to never come back again
