Harriet Tubman’s Ballard

[00:00:00] Harriet Tubman's Ballard - Woody Guthrie

[00:00:04] I was five years old in Bucktown Maryland

[00:00:10] When into slavery I was sent

[00:00:16] I'll tell you of the beatings and of the fighting

[00:00:23] In my ninety-three years I've spent

[00:00:28] I helped a field hand make a run for freedom

[00:00:33] When my fifteenth year was rolling round

[00:00:40] And the guard he caught him in a little store

[00:00:46] In a little slavery village town

[00:00:52] The boss made a grab to catch the field hand

[00:00:59] I jumped in and blocked the door

[00:01:05] The boss he hit me with a two pound scale iron

[00:01:11] And I went black down on the floor

[00:01:18] On a bundle of rags in our log cabin

[00:01:24] My mother she ministered unto my needs

[00:01:31] It was here I swore I'd give my life blood

[00:01:37] Just to turn my people free

[00:01:44] In '44 I married John Tubman

[00:01:50] Well I loved him well till '49

[00:01:56] But he would not come and fight beside me

[00:02:02] So I left him there behind

[00:02:08] I left Bucktown with my two brothers

[00:02:14] But they got scared and run back home

[00:02:21] I followed my northern star of freedom

[00:02:27] I walked the grass and trees alone

[00:02:33] I slept in a barn loft and in a haystack

[00:02:38] I slept with my people in slavery shacks

[00:02:44] They said I'd die by the boss man's bullets

[00:02:51] But I told them I can't turn back

[00:02:57] The sun was shining in the early morning

[00:03:04] When I come to my free state line

[00:03:11] I pinched myself to see if I was dreaming

[00:03:18] I just could not believe my eyes

[00:03:28] I went back home and I got my parents

[00:03:34] I loaded them into a buckboard hack

[00:03:40] We crossed six states and other slaves followed

[00:03:46] Up to Canada made our tracks

[00:03:52] One slave got scared and he tried to turn backwards

[00:03:58] I pulled my pistol in front of his eyes

[00:04:05] I said get up and walk to your freedom

[00:04:11] Or by this fireball you will die

[00:04:18] When John Brown hit them at Harper's Ferry

[00:04:25] My men was fighting right by his side

[00:04:32] When John Brown swung upon his gallows

[00:04:39] It's then I hung my head and cried

[00:04:45] Give the black man guns and give him powder

[00:04:52] To Abe Lincoln this I said:

[00:04:59] You've just crippled that snake of slavery

[00:05:06] We've got to fight to kill him dead

[00:05:13] When we faced the guns of lightning

[00:05:19] And the thunders broke our sleep

[00:05:26] After we waded the bloody rainstorms

[00:05:32] It was dead men that we reaped

[00:05:37] Yes we faced the zigzag lightning

[00:05:43] But it was worth the price we paid

[00:05:49] When our thunder had rumbled over

[00:05:54] We'd laid slavery in its grave

[00:06:02] Come now and stand around my deathbed

[00:06:09] And I will sing some spirit songs

[00:06:16] I'm on my way to my greater union

[00:06:24] Now my ninety-three years are gone
