Many Trails(Album Version)

[00:00:00] Many Trails - Bill Miller

[00:00:00] A boy heard the voice of

[00:00:01] The whippoorwill one night

[00:00:03] And went out to find where he was singing

[00:00:06] He had to walk quite a ways through a big field

[00:00:08] Because the song of the whippoorwill

[00:00:09] Carried so well in the wind

[00:00:11] He sounded much closer then he really was

[00:00:14] And on the way the boy found a well worn trail

[00:00:18] So he stayed on it for a while

[00:00:21] And sitting in the middle of the trail was coyote

[00:00:24] And coyote was singing too

[00:00:27] He turned and saw the boy and he said

[00:00:28] "Why are you following me "

[00:00:31] The boy was frightened and said

[00:00:32] "Well the trail you made happened to be a short

[00:00:35] And easy way through this field

[00:00:37] Then coyote asked "Well if you're not following me

[00:00:40] Then why are you here "

[00:00:42] "Well I heard the beautiful song of the whippoorwill

[00:00:45] And wanted to watch him sing"

[00:00:48] "Well do you not think my songs are beautiful "

[00:00:50] Said coyote

[00:00:52] "Oh" said the boy

[00:00:53] "They're good but I hear you all the time

[00:00:56] I much prefer the songs of the whippoorwill"

[00:00:59] This made coyote furious and

[00:01:00] He was jealous of the whippoorwill's song

[00:01:03] He said "Listen to my night song

[00:01:05] You might like this one"

[00:01:07] And he pulled back his head

[00:01:09] And yodeled out a tune

[00:01:12] The boy covered his ears and politely said

[00:01:14] "Thank you for the song

[00:01:16] But I must be going now"

[00:01:19] "Well" coyote said

[00:01:21] "I can show you a short cut to the whippoorwill boy

[00:01:24] And where he sings is just over there"

[00:01:26] Pointing his claw

[00:01:27] Smiling out of the side of his mouth

[00:01:30] The boy paused looked around

[00:01:33] He knew the night was passing fast

[00:01:34] So he agreed to follow coyote

[00:01:37] But coyote's trail was rough and rocky

[00:01:41] And the boy fell in quite

[00:01:42] A few gopher holes along the way

[00:01:45] Coyote turned around and laughed

[00:01:47] And he yelled to the boy

[00:01:48] "We're almost there hurry up"

[00:01:50] Coyote was at a full trot but the boy

[00:01:52] Had just fallen again and hurt his knee

[00:01:55] And by the time he got to the place

[00:01:57] Where the whippoorwill had been singing all night

[00:02:00] It was morning

[00:02:03] Whippoorwill was gone and so was coyote

[00:02:07] In fact he could hear coyote's songs in another field

[00:02:12] So the boy turned and headed for home

[00:02:16] Covered with burns

[00:02:17] Mosquito bites and a skinned up knee

[00:02:22] And it was many summers later

[00:02:23] When the boy became a wiser man

[00:02:26] And he realized there are no shortcuts

[00:02:28] To find something you really love

[00:02:32] But there are many trails in this life

[00:02:35] So you must stay true to your path

[00:02:39] And always keep and eye out for coyote
