Sam Goes to It

[00:00:01] Sam Goes To It - Stanley Holloway

[00:00:08] Sam Small had retired from the Army

[00:00:11] In the old Duke of Wellington's time

[00:00:13] So when present unpleasantness started

[00:00:16] He were what you might call past his prime

[00:00:19] He'd lived for some years in retirement

[00:00:22] And knew nowt of war if you please

[00:00:25] Till they blasted and bombed his allotment

[00:00:28] And shelled the best part of his peas

[00:00:32] T were as if bugles called Sam to duty

[00:00:34] For his musket he started to search

[00:00:37] He found it at last in the Hen house

[00:00:40] Buff Orpingtons had it for perch

[00:00:43] Straight off to the Fusilliers' depot

[00:00:46] He went to rejoin his old troop

[00:00:49] Where he found as they couldn't recruit Him

[00:00:52] Until his age group was called up

[00:00:55] Now Sam wasn't getting no younger

[00:00:58] Past the three score and ten years was he

[00:01:01] And he reckoned by time they reached his age group

[00:01:04] He'd be very near ten score and three

[00:01:07] So he took up the matter with Churchill

[00:01:09] Who said I don't know what to do

[00:01:13] Never was there a time when so many

[00:01:16] Came asking so much from so few

[00:01:20] I don't want no favours Sam answered

[00:01:23] Don't think as I'm one of that mob

[00:01:26] All I'm asking is give me the tools lad

[00:01:29] And let me help finish the job

[00:01:31] I'll fit you in somewhere said Winnie

[00:01:34] Old soldiers we must not discard

[00:01:38] Then seeing he'd got his own musket

[00:01:41] He sent him to join the Home Guard

[00:01:44] They gave Sam a coat with no stripes on

[00:01:47] In spite of the service he'd seen

[00:01:50] Which considering he'd been a King's sergeant

[00:01:53] Kind of rankled you know what I mean

[00:01:56] He said I come back to the Army

[00:01:59] Expecting my country's thanks

[00:02:02] And the first thing I find when I get here

[00:02:05] Is that I've been reduced to the ranks

[00:02:08] He found all the lads sympathetic

[00:02:10] They agreed that 'twere a disgrace

[00:02:13] Except one old chap in the corner

[00:02:16] With a nutcracker kind of a face

[00:02:19] Said the old fella Who do you think you are

[00:02:22] The last to appear on the scene

[00:02:25] And you start off by wanting promotion

[00:02:28] Last come last served see what I mean

[00:02:32] Said Sam Wasn't I at Corunna

[00:02:35] And when company commander got shot

[00:02:37] Didn't I lead battalion to victory

[00:02:40] Said the old fella No you did not

[00:02:44] I didn't said Sam quite indignent

[00:02:46] Why in every fight Wellington fought

[00:02:49] Wasn't I at his right hand to guard him

[00:02:52] Said old chap You were nowt of the sort

[00:02:56] What do you know of Duke and his battles

[00:02:59] Said Sam with a whithering look

[00:03:01] Said the old man I ought to know something

[00:03:05] Between you and me I'm the Duke

[00:03:09] And if you should look in any evening

[00:03:12] You'll find them both in the canteen

[00:03:15] Ex Commander in Chief and ex Sergeant

[00:03:18] Both just Home Guards you know what I mean
