Estelle(Album Version)

[00:00:00] Estelle - Dan Bern

[00:00:28] I was painting a still life this morning

[00:00:31] Of a throat lozenge sitting

[00:00:32] On a copy of Tropic of Cancer

[00:00:34] The only thing weird

[00:00:35] About it is that a year ago

[00:00:37] I never thought I'd paint anything again

[00:00:39] I decided I wasn't ever gonna paint again

[00:00:42] It didn't bother me too much Warhol's dead

[00:00:45] David Hockney's still alive

[00:00:47] I don't need to paint

[00:00:50] I painted over ten thousand paintings

[00:00:53] Sad ones funny ones

[00:00:55] Dark ones and light ones

[00:00:56] I've done haystacks and

[00:00:58] Rich old ladies by their pools

[00:00:59] Wearing nothing but a scarf

[00:01:02] I've painted everything there was to paint

[00:01:04] Now it was time to sit back give interviews

[00:01:07] Get on the internet hang out at club med

[00:01:10] Take stock of what I've done

[00:01:13] You know the best friend I ever had was a dog

[00:01:16] It sounds like a cliche

[00:01:17] Unless it's happened to you

[00:01:19] Some days that dog was the

[00:01:20] Only reason I even got out of bed

[00:01:24] That dog went everywhere with me

[00:01:26] And then I heard the crack addicts

[00:01:28] Were stealin' dogs and

[00:01:29] Selling them for animal research

[00:01:30] It sounded like an urban myth to

[00:01:32] Me like the mouse in the Coke bottle

[00:01:33] But I started leavin' her at home after that

[00:01:36] You know Paula was my wife for a while

[00:01:39] She ran off to Paris with

[00:01:40] The great grandson of Van Gogh

[00:01:42] A cartoonist who did

[00:01:43] Fashion graphics for Le Monde

[00:01:47] When Paula left she took

[00:01:48] My dog I never saw her again

[00:01:51] Except in the court during the custody battle

[00:01:53] She won and got to keep the dog

[00:01:55] And I didn't speak to anyone for months

[00:01:58] You know sometimes it feels

[00:02:01] Like there's so much that you need

[00:02:04] Sometimes the world is upside down

[00:02:10] Sometimes it seems like the only thing you need

[00:02:15] Is holdin' someone's

[00:02:17] Hand as you walk through town

[00:02:29] I started hanging around with Dino

[00:02:31] He used to run a poker game back east

[00:02:33] Now he has a little coffee shop

[00:02:35] Sells cappuccino to his old pals

[00:02:37] Tommy Chicago and Jimmy the Wig and Ugly Rose

[00:02:40] You know the best person I ever knew

[00:02:42] Was a Mormon woman named Estelle

[00:02:44] She still calls me drunk every few months

[00:02:46] And asks me stuff I don't want to talk about

[00:02:49] You can't talk to her long

[00:02:50] Unless you're drunk yourself

[00:02:51] Then we go all night

[00:03:02] Yeah she goes "Why baby

[00:03:04] Why baby why baby why

[00:03:06] Have you turned your back on love

[00:03:08] You had so many chances

[00:03:09] Why have you let 'em all go by "

[00:03:14] Well one morning I was sitting

[00:03:15] Out in front of Dino's place

[00:03:17] With Jake the Shears a guy

[00:03:18] From Philly who gives free mohawks

[00:03:20] There were a couple of young

[00:03:21] Painters I was hopin' to come by

[00:03:22] So I could give 'em some advice

[00:03:25] Yeah I was sittin' there updating my list of enemies

[00:03:28] When this girl walks in

[00:03:29] And the universe kind of stops

[00:03:31] Turned out she drank the same tea as me

[00:03:33] Don't take more than that

[00:03:34] To start a conversation sometimes

[00:03:36] She believed collage was

[00:03:37] The greatest of all the arts

[00:03:39] And was busy pasting pictures

[00:03:40] Of horses next to ads for laundry soap

[00:03:43] Next to Mohammed Ali

[00:03:44] She had a turquoise in her ear

[00:03:46] And said Rachmaninoff

[00:03:46] Was always in her head

[00:03:48] But later that day I was trying

[00:03:50] To describe her to Jimmy the Wig

[00:03:52] I couldn't find any words and

[00:03:54] I realized I'd started to sketch her chin

[00:03:58] Somehow it didn't look right

[00:04:00] I scratched it out and tried it again

[00:04:03] I filled an entire pad I threw

[00:04:06] It away I never even came close

[00:04:09] For a six days I sat at Dino's place

[00:04:12] The rain wouldn't quit

[00:04:14] And no one came in

[00:04:15] Finally on the seventh day

[00:04:17] It cleared and in she walked

[00:04:20] I asked her to sit with me

[00:04:22] And I bought her a cup of tea

[00:04:24] And I asked her to

[00:04:25] Model for me sometime

[00:04:26] That afternoon I was at a canvas

[00:04:28] She was wearing a yellow dress

[00:04:30] I swore if she let me I'd get it right

[00:04:32] I've painted over ten thousand paintings

[00:04:35] Sad ones funny ones

[00:04:36] Dark ones and light ones

[00:04:38] But sitting there it was like

[00:04:39] I couldn't even write my own name

[00:04:43] I apologized and said "It's been a few months

[00:04:45] If you have patience

[00:04:47] I'll get the hang of it again"

[00:04:48] In the next few weeks

[00:04:50] I painted her hundreds of times

[00:04:54] If I get the nose right the chin's too long

[00:04:57] If I get 'em both right the face is too thin

[00:05:00] But I keep after it and

[00:05:01] One day I I'll get it all right

[00:05:28] I painted a still life

[00:05:29] This morning of a throat lozenge

[00:05:31] Sitting on a copy of Tropic of Cancer

[00:05:33] The only thing was funny is that

[00:05:35] I never thought I'd paint anything again

[00:05:39] I think I might go visit Estelle

[00:05:41] Those Utah mountains are good for the soul

[00:05:44] I'll bring my brushes and some Jack Daniels

[00:05:46] And we can make up for lost time

[00:05:49] And she said "Why baby

[00:05:51] Why baby why baby why

[00:05:53] Baby why have you turned your back on love

[00:05:55] You had so many chances

[00:05:56] Why have you let 'em all go by "

[00:06:00] And she says "Why baby

[00:06:02] Why baby why baby why

[00:06:03] Baby why have you turned your back on love

[00:06:06] You had so many chances

[00:06:07] Why have you let 'em all go by "

[00:06:11] Sometimes it seems like

[00:06:15] There's so much that you need

[00:06:17] Sometimes the world is upside down

[00:06:23] Sometimes it seems

[00:06:26] Like the only thing you need

[00:06:29] Is holdin' someone's hand

[00:06:31] As you walk through town
