[00:01:08] Indeed, it's been a long strange trip for Warlocks leader Bobby Hecksher since

[00:01:24] his band played their first gig on July 4th, 1998. Hecksher, who moved to

[00:01:40] California from Florida in the late '80s, formed his first group shortly after

[00:01:53] arriving. Charles Brown Superstar issued two singles and two full-length

[00:02:09] albums before calling it a day. Hecksher was later invited to play on Beck's

[00:02:30] Stereo Pathetic Soul Manure (Flipside), then -- along with James Ambrose

[00:02:49] -- formed Magic Pacer, who waxed two albums for Win Records before Hecksher

[00:03:00] splintered off to do his own thing. Over the course of several years and

[00:03:18] many personnel changes, Hecksher eventually formed his eight-piece band,

[00:03:30] calling them the Warlocks, a moniker that had been previously used by early

[00:03:48] incarnations of both the Velvet Underground and the Grateful Dead.

[00:03:50] While no one will mistake them for a Deadhead band, the Warlocks' earliest

[00:03:55] recordings do often sound like they're channeling a fever-soaked Velvet

[00:04:08] Underground (circa White Light, White Heat), while drawing further influence

[00:04:17] from space rock, prog, and Krautrock bands (including Neu! and Hawkwind).

[00:04:26] The Warlocks subsequently emerged as leading lights on the Los Angeles

[00:04:35] music scene in 1999-2000, and in October 2000 Hecksher signed a two-album

[00:04:45] production deal with America's oldest indie label, the Burbank-based Bomp!,

[00:04:54] who issued their self-titled debut EP in early 2001. Hecksher has also

[00:05:08] produced a 16mm short for "Cocaine Blues," which features cameo appearances

[00:05:16] by Hecksher and friends (including Rivers Cuomo of Weezer).
