[00:00:00] Poetry & Jazz - John Otway

[00:00:42] She said

[00:00:43] It's hard for me to explain to you

[00:00:44] The brightness of the light

[00:00:46] I can still remember

[00:00:48] When my life was like that

[00:00:50] A real and painless beauty

[00:00:51] I remember as a kid

[00:00:53] When I thought that I knew everything

[00:00:55] And in a way I did

[00:00:56] She was a virgin then

[00:00:59] A child in a million

[00:01:00] With deep round hazel

[00:01:02] Eyes of bazing intuition

[00:01:04] She called me over to her side

[00:01:06] And said

[00:01:06] Will you please listen

[00:01:07] I wanna show you something

[00:01:09] And it's something I've just written

[00:01:10] And I'm calling it Poetry and Jazz

[00:01:17] She watched her happy family

[00:01:19] Turn to a broken home

[00:01:21] Her father left with someone else

[00:01:23] Her mother on her own

[00:01:24] Her fourteenth birthday

[00:01:26] Her mother spent in tears

[00:01:28] She celebrated on her own

[00:01:30] Her adolescent years

[00:01:31] It was hell then

[00:01:33] Caught in the crossfire

[00:01:35] Of an emotional triangle

[00:01:36] She couldn't keep together

[00:01:39] I heard her softly as

[00:01:41] She sobbed upon my shoulder

[00:01:42] Saying

[00:01:43] "As you are the closest thing

[00:01:44] I've got to a brother

[00:01:45] Explain to me why is life so sad"

[00:01:52] Sixteen was better 'cause sixteen was boys

[00:01:56] Make-up parties alcohol and clothes

[00:01:59] And saying to your boyfriend

[00:02:01] "Come on get out of bed

[00:02:02] Look its three o clock in the

[00:02:04] Afternoon and my mother's coming back"

[00:02:06] And she smiled then

[00:02:08] Her eyes filled with laughter

[00:02:10] She didn't know if it was love

[00:02:12] But it didn't really matter

[00:02:13] She called me on the phone and said

[00:02:15] "Hey get this big brother

[00:02:17] I just got rid of one boyfriend

[00:02:18] And got myself another

[00:02:20] And listen this one drives a Jag"

[00:02:27] She left school and boyfriends

[00:02:29] For university

[00:02:31] Three years of study for an art degree

[00:02:34] Her clothes were outrageous

[00:02:36] Her hair was many colours

[00:02:37] Her work was radical and so were her ideas

[00:02:41] She said

[00:02:41] "This is brilliant this place is heaven

[00:02:45] On a score of one to ten

[00:02:46] I'd give this place eleven

[00:02:48] It kicks you up the a** and it

[00:02:50] Fires you with ambition

[00:02:52] I often used to feel as if my

[00:02:53] Life was just a prison

[00:02:55] Now I realise it isn't quite that bad"

[00:03:55] I was invited to an exhibition

[00:03:57] A little while ago

[00:03:58] To an art gallery in Paris

[00:04:00] Where she has a studio

[00:04:02] She looked sophisticated

[00:04:03] She was wearing a bronze tan

[00:04:05] And she'd sold all her work

[00:04:07] For some outrageous sum

[00:04:09] And I looked at her

[00:04:11] And I started laughing

[00:04:12] I said look you're supposed to

[00:04:14] Be an artist

[00:04:14] You're supposed to be suffering

[00:04:16] And she just smiled back and

[00:04:18] Pointed to this painting

[00:04:20] Of a young girl around which

[00:04:21] She'd written out this poem

[00:04:23] She'd shown me once called

[00:04:25] Poetry and Jazz

[00:04:30] My name is Angela

[00:04:32] I am twelve years old

[00:04:33] I've given up on working

[00:04:35] Hard and doing as I'm told

[00:04:37] I see a child psychologist

[00:04:39] Who's spotted in my head

[00:04:40] A recipe for delinquency

[00:04:42] Or something just as bad

[00:04:43] But I'll fight for my independence

[00:04:47] I see the world in another way

[00:04:49] To my teachers and my parents

[00:04:51] My priorities are different

[00:04:53] And my life is not as aimless

[00:04:54] I am not disruptive and

[00:04:56] I'm not dangerous

[00:04:58] I've rhythm and purpose

[00:05:00] Like poetry and jazz

[00:05:08] She said "It's hard for me

[00:05:09] To explain to you

[00:05:10] The brightness of the light

[00:05:11] I can still remember

[00:05:13] When my life was like that

[00:05:15] A real and painless beauty

[00:05:17] I remember as a kid

[00:05:18] When I thought that I knew

[00:05:20] Everything and in a way I did
